Managing the backup media

This topic provides information about the backup media used to back up Avaya™ S3400 Message Server data. This topic is organized as follows:

About the backup drive and media

The S3400 uses a Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) Random Access Memory (RAM) drive located in the Message Storage Server (MSS) to back up data. See the Front view of the Message Storage Server-Standard (MSS-S) for the location of the DVD-RAM drive. One DVD-RAM medium holds approximately 4.7-GB of data. In the event of a system failure, the data stored on the media is used to restore the system back to an operational state.

For more information about DVD-RAM media, such as care and storage instructions or for instructions on how to write protect or remove write protection, see the documentation that accompanies the media.

Alternating the backup media

To ensure that acceptable backup data is available when needed, do not use just one DVD-RAM medium for attended and unattended backups. It is recommended that you alternate between at least two media for unattended backups. Additional media can be used to implement a longer cycle. For example, you could alternate among seven media, each one labeled with one day of the week.
