Conventions Used

This topic describes the terminology and typographical conventions that are used in this Help system. This topic is organized as follows:

General conventions

This Help system uses the following general conventions:

  • Administration topics apply specifically to the MAS or MSS. The indicator (MAS Admin) or (MSS Admin) displays in the title of the browser window and also in the search result listings.
  • For the MSS, the Messaging Administration main menu provides access to the screens and pages that allow you to administer the Message Storage Server (MSS). Instructions for accessing the different areas of the MSS are provided in the following form:
    1. Start at the Messaging Administration main menu and select:
    2. Utilities
           Reboot System

  • For the MAS, menu selections are shown in bold text, such as: "From the Reports menu, choose System Usage."
  • Unvisited links appear as blue, underlined text. Visited links appear as olive green underlined text.
  • Selections you make in the interface are shown in bold text. For example, "click Save to save your changes."
  • Type means to press the key or the sequence of keys specified. For example, an instruction to enter a name is shown as:
Type the name of the subscriber you are adding.

Web-based administration pages

The Help for web-based administration pages uses the following conventions:

  • A "page" refers to the information that is displayed in the web-based interface.
  • Field names on the web-based pages are shown in regular text.

Messaging command prompt screens

  • A "screen" refers to the information that is displayed in the Messaging command prompt screens.
  • Instructions for accessing the Messaging command prompt screens are provided in the following form:
    1. Start at the Messaging Administration main menu and select:

      Global Administration
           Messaging Administration

The system displays the SSH User Authentication dialog box. Enter your login, for example, sa or vm, in the User name field and your password in the Password field. Click Login. The system then displays the Messaging command prompt screen.

  • Commands you enter at the Messaging command prompt screen command line are shown in bold. For example:
    change system-parameters limits
  • Variables within commands are shown in bold, italic text. For example:
add machine newyork where newyork is the variable.
  • Enter means to type a value and then press the Enter key. For example, an instruction to type the letter "y" and press Enter is shown as:
    1. Enter y to continue.
  • Select means to move the cursor to the desired line item and then press Enter.

Keyboard and telephone keypad

  • Keys that you press on the keyboard of your computer are shown in initial capital letters and in bold. For example, an instruction to press the Enter key is shown as:

    Press Enter.

  • Two keys that you press at the same time on the keyboard of your computer (that is, you press and hold down the first key and then press the second key) are represented as a series of key names separated by a plus sign (+) and are shown in bold. For example, an instruction to press and hold Alt while typing the letter "d" is shown as:

    Press Alt+D.

  • A combination keystroke is a series of keystrokes that combines the two key functions as described above plus a third key. That is, you press and hold down the first key, then press the second key, and then release those keys and press a third key. This third key is separated from the first two by a space. For example, an instruction to press and hold Alt while typing the letter "d" and then typing the number "1" is shown as:

    Press Alt+D 1.

  • Function keys on your computer keyboard or system screens are followed by the function or value of that key enclosed in parentheses. For example, an instruction to press the function key 3 is shown as:

    Press F3 (Save).

  • Keys that you press on your telephone keypad are shown as numbers. For example, an instruction to press the first key on your telephone keypad is shown as:

Press 1 to record a message.
