Updating software

This topic describes how to update software on your Message Storage Server (MSS) to the latest version using the Automatic Software Update feature. If your system was just installed, you do not need to perform a software update.

Note: Updating the MSS software requires a server restart. Plan to do the software update during low usage hours.

To perform a MSS software update:

  1. Perform an attended backup. See Backing up system files (attended) for more information.
  2. Press the eject button on the front of the DVD-RAM drive and remove the DVD-RAM backup medium, if necessary.
  3. Insert the Avaya™ Modular Messaging Release 1 Message Storage Server (MSS) Software CD in to the DVD-RAM drive.

Note: When inserting the software CD in to the DVD-RAM drive tray, make sure that you place the CD solidly between the plastic clips.

  4. Log in to the system with the sa or craft login and password.
  5. From the web-based Messaging Administration main menu, select:

    Utilities
         Software Management
               Software Update

  6. Select CD and follow the on-screen instructions to navigate to the CD.

  7. If necessary, a new version of Software Management will be installed. Click Continue after it installs.

The server displays a list of available packages, some of which are marked for installation.

Note: If you did not complete an attended backup in Step 1, the system displays a message that a successful backup has not been completed in the past two hours. Click Cancel (return to Utilities menu) to cancel the software update. Go back to Step 1 and perform an attended backup.

  8. Click to mark additional packages you want to install, if necessary.
  9. Click Install Selected Packages.

The server displays a list of packages to be installed.

  10. Verify the list. If you need to change the list, click Back on the browser toolbar, and select or deselect packages. Then click Install Selected Packages to re-verify the list.

Note: You will have to wait approximately 45 seconds before you can continue with Step 11.

  11. Click Proceed with Installation.

While the server is installing the software, it displays the installation output.

  12. Scroll down the page periodically to view the installation output.

When the update finishes, the server displays three choices.

  13. If you need to install additional software or hardware, follow the instructions. After the software is installed, scroll down to see the bottom of the status page.
  14. If all software was installed successfully, remove the CD from the drive.
  15. Insert a DVD-RAM backup medium in to the DVD-RAM drive in anticipation for the next unattended backup.
  16. Click Restart the System.

The system reboots and then returns you to the console login when the reboot is complete.

  17. Log back in to the system and test system features by creating test messages and checking subscriber information.
  18. Click Return to Main to return to the Messaging Administration main menu.
