This topic describes how to update software on your Message Storage
Server (MSS) to the latest version. If your system was just installed,
you usually do not need to perform a software update. You can use
the following methods to update the MSS software:
Note: Updating the MSS software requires a server restart.
Plan to do the software update during low usage hours.
Updating the MSS software via CD/DVD
To perform a MSS software update using a CD or DVD:
- Perform an attended backup. See Backing
up system files (attended) for more information.
- Remove the DVD-RAM backup medium, if necessary. See Managing the MSS backup media.
- Insert the Avaya Modular Messaging Message Storage Server
(MSS) Software medium in the DVD-RAM drive.
- Log in to the system.
- On the Software Update page, select CD/DVD.
- If necessary, a new version of Software Management will be installed. Click Continue after it installs.
- If you did not complete an attended backup within the past two hours, the system displays a warning message. Click Cancel to cancel the software update. Then return to Step 1 and perform an attended backup.
The server displays a list of the software packages available for installation. Some of the packages have a check mark in the box next to them to indicate that they are to be installed.
- Click any additional packages that you want to install.
- Click Install selected packages.
- The server displays a list of packages to be installed. Verify that the list is accurate. If you need to change the list, return to Step 5.
- Click Proceed with Installation.
The system displays the progress of the
installation.
- While the server is installing software packages, scroll down the page periodically to view the installation output.
- When the update is complete, verify that the software was installed successfully.
- If all software was successfully installed, remove the media from
the drive.
- Insert a new DVD-RAM backup medium into the DVD-RAM drive for
the next unattended backup. Do not reinsert
the same DVD-RAM on which you just made a backup.
- Click Reboot.
The system reboots.
- When the login prompt displays, log in to the system.
- Test system features by creating
test messages and checking subscriber information.

Use the following steps to update the MSS software via service pack software downloaded from the MAS.
To perform a MSS software update:
