MAS Intro - Rebooting MASs for Routine Maintenance

Messaging Application Servers (MASs) must be rebooted as part of routine administration and ongoing maintenance.

Reboot Frequency

You must reboot your MASs at regular intervals, for instance every 3 or 4 months. The exact reboot period depends on your system.

Note: If you go to Microsoft with a Windows support problem on your MAS, then they'll turn you away, if the server has been running for more than 90 days.

If you have high usage MASs, you should reboot more frequently, for instance once per month.

Rebooting Multiple MAS Systems

For a Modular Messaging system with multiple MASs, you must reboot one MAS at a time, waiting for each to come back before rebooting the next.

The reboot of each MAS should be an orderly shutdown and restart, as described in “Procedure 1” and “Procedure 2” below.

Note: For more detailed procedures, see the “Turning the Servers Off and On” chapter and “Getting Inside the Chassis” chapter of the Avaya Modular Messaging Installation and Upgrades Guide.

Procedure 1: Turning Off an S3500-Family MAS

Important!   The power cord set provided with this product must be used with this product only. Do not use the cord set with any other product, and do not use a different cord set with this product. Using the wrong cord set could lead to hazardous incidents such as electric shock, fire, and faulty operation.
  1. Before you reboot each MAS, take the MAS ports out of service on the switch, if possible, using the procedure appropriate for each PBX. Depending on the switch integration, you might be able to temporarily reroute calls to other MASs. Otherwise, callers into the system might hear ring-no answer (RNA) or a busy signal until the MAS is back in service.
Note: On MASs with Dialogic cards, you should also double-check that the Dialogic Service is set to Manual.
  2. Make a note of which Modular Messaging services are running on the MAS, so that you know which services to restart after the reboot.
  3. Shut down the software on the server:
    1. Remove any disk from the DVD drive.
    2. Click Start > Shut Down.
    3. In the Shut Down Windows window, select Shut Down and click OK.
    4. The server shuts down the software and turns off automatically.

  4. If the server fails to turn off automatically, push and hold down the power button on the front of the server for a few seconds.
  5. Verify that the blue power lamp on the front of the server is dark.
Note: Some components on S3500-family servers remain active even after you turn off the server. Always unplug any S3500-family server that is not in active service.
  6. To completely remove power to the server, unplug the AC power cord.
Note: In the United Kingdom, if a modem is attached to the server, first disconnect the telephone line from the server, then unplug the power cord.

Procedure 2: Turning On an S3500-Family MAS

Important!   The power cord set provided with this product must be used with this product only. Do not use the cord set with any other product, and do not use a different cord set with this product. Using the wrong cord set could lead to hazardous incidents such as electric shock, fire, and faulty operation.
  1. Plug in the AC power cord.
  2. As soon as AC power is applied, the S3500-family server starts to boot. You do not need to push the power button on the front of the server if AC power is available.

  3. If the AC power cord is already connected and the S3500-family server is off:
    1. Press the power button on the front of the server.
    2. If the server still does not start, verify that the Modular Messaging system has AC power. Check the UPS settings, and that the UPS is receiving AC power.
  4. If the server is already configured, log on to the server after the reboot is complete. Verify that all Modular Messaging services required for this server are started.
  5. Continue with any procedures needed to bring the system into full service.
Note: If the you took the MAS ports out of service on the switch, you must bring them back into service.
