Administering SNMP on the MSS

This topic provides information on administering the SNMP feature on the Modular Messaging MSS. See Simple Network Management Protocol overview for information on basic SNMP concepts and features.

Before you attempt to administer SNMP Network Management Stations (NMSs) for queries on the Modular Messaging system, make sure that your remote network and the Modular Messaging system are both TCP/IP enabled. See Administering networking on the MSS for administration procedures.

If you want to perform alarm notification via SNMP, you must administer the NMS to which Modular Messaging sends alarm notifications (traps). See your SNMP NMS application documentation for details about how to complete this task and confirm communication between the NMS and managed elements.

The tasks you must complete to administer SNMP on the Modular Messaging system depends on the version of SNMP you are using.

Note: If you want to use SNMP for alarm notification, you must first transfer the appropriate Avaya MIBs to the NMSs you administer to receive alarm notification. The Avaya OAM and SNMP MIBs are available from the Avaya Support Web site at http://www.avaya.com/support.

For SNMP versions 1 and 2c, complete the following tasks in the following recommended order:

  1. Configuring MIB-II parameters
  2. Administering SNMP communities
  3. Administering SNMP query originators , if you choose to use SNMP for queries
  4. Administering SNMP trap destinations, if you choose to use SNMP for alarm notifications (traps)
  5. Configuring alarms, if you choose to configure alarms using SNMP. To access the Configure Alarms page, start at the Administration menu, and select Alarming > Alarming Configuration. The system displays the Configure Alarms page. You can click field names or Help for more information.

For SNMP version 3, complete the following tasks in the following recommended order:

  1. Configuring MIB-II parameters
  2. Administering SNMP users
  3. Administering SNMP communities, if you choose to use SNMP for alarms
  4. Administering SNMP query originators, if you choose to use SNMP for queries
  5. Configuring alarms, if you choose to configure alarms using SNMP. To access the Configure Alarms page, start at the Administration menu, and select Alarming > Alarming Configuration. The system displays the Configure Alarms page. You can click field names or Help for more information.

Note: Administrators can perform Alarming administration independent of the SNMP administration activity.
