Backing up the system

Modular Messaging allows you to back up critical MAS and MSS data. You can use the backed-up data to restore data to the servers if a system failure occurs.

Two types of backups are supported for the MAS and MSS:

  • Unattended backup: The unattended backup automatically saves critical Message Storage Server (MSS) and Messaging Application Server (MAS) data. The MAS unattended backup is usually scheduled to run one hour before midnight, but you can reschedule it. The MAS performs the unattended backup using the private LAN to copy data from the MAS to the MSS. After the MAS data are copied to the MSS, the files are then backed up again along with critical MSS system files. The MSS unattended backup automatically occurs every morning at 3:05 AM. The approximate time an unattended backup takes depends on a number of factors, including whether you are backing up using the LAN or the DVD-RAM drive on the MSS and the amount of subscriber and system data.
  • Attended backup: The attended backup allows you to complete a full system backup of Message Storage Server (MSS) and Messaging Application Server (MAS) data at any time. It is recommended that you perform a full attended backup if your system is unable to complete a full unattended backup, which could happen if your system contains a large amount of subscriber data. You should also perform an attended backup whenever you make extensive changes to subscriber profiles, after additional subscriber names have been recorded, or if you make other customized data changes, such as recording custom prompts.
