Performing an MSS reboot

This topic describes how to reboot the Message Storage Server (MSS). You can reboot the MSS from the console or, if you have the ability to access your system remotely, from a web browser inside your intranet firewall or through a PPP connection outside your firewall. A complete server reboot takes approximately 15 minutes to complete.

The reboot refreshes the MSS operating system's resources and keeps applications running reliably.

For more information, see Maintenance Checklist.

Caution!
You cannot reboot your server if a backup is running. Automatic unattended backups occur at 3:05 AM, so avoid rebooting the system between 2:30 a.m. and 4:00 a.m.

To perform an MSS reboot:

  1. On the Reboot Server page, click Reboot.
  2. The system displays a reboot warning.

  3. Read the warning and click OK if you want to continue with the reboot, or click Cancel if you want to cancel the reboot.

If you clicked OK, the server reboots.

  4. Do one of the following:
    • If you are performing the reboot from a remote location using your LAN or a dial-up connection, you are then automatically disconnected from the server and need to reconnect to the server after the reboot is complete. A reboot takes approximately 15 minutes to complete.
    • If you are performing the reboot from the console, you see many LINUX messages while the system reboots. The server displays the following message when the reboot is complete:
    • Press Enter to return to prompt ...

After the above message is displayed, do the following:

      1. Press Enter.
      2. Verify that a final console login prompt is displayed. When it is displayed, the reboot is complete.

Note: If FAIL appears in the status column for any component, do the following:

          • Record the name of the component.
          • Access the Alarm log.
  5. Log back in to the system to verify that the reboot was successful. See Logging in to the MSS for more information.

The previous procedure provides the steps to reboot the MSS using the web administration pages. You can also reboot the MSS by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del directly from the console. You can use the Administer Console Reboot Option page to control whether administrators can press Ctrl+Alt+Del from the console to reboot the MSS:

  1. On the Administer Console Reboot Option page, in the Console Reboot field, select one of the following options:
    • To allow administrators to reboot the MSS by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del from the console, leave this field at the default of Enable.
    • To prevent administrators from rebooting the MSS by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del from the console, select Disable.
  2. Click Save.
  3. The system saves the change you made and displays a confirmation dialog box.

  4. Click OK.
