Call Handling With the Call Handling feature, subscribers can administer the system to differentiate between calls that reach a mailbox because an extension is busy or because there is no answer. Enable subscribers to use the Call Handling feature. See SA - Modular Messaging - Advanced Properties Dialog Box. From Subscriber Options and Web Subscriber Options, subscribers can override call handling.

Caller Applications Caller Applications is a feature that allows you to customize the interaction of Modular Messaging with the callers'. For example, to route calls or to play a pre-recorded information. Caller Applications allows administrators to extend those parts of the Modular Messaging TUI that are accessible to callers.

Caller Applications (CA) Editor

Associate a Caller Application with a subscriber's secondary extension number. See SA - Modular Messaging - Extension Number Options Dialog Box.

Enable subscribers to record Caller Application prompts. See SA - Modular Messaging - Advanced Properties Dialog Box.

Greetings and prompts for a subscriber mailbox

Subscribers can set up the Modular Messaging TUIs to play personalized Call Answer greetings to callers.

Subscribers can now record and use up to nine optional greetings in three different languages. Subscribers can also set up greeting rules to determine which optional greeting a caller hears.

Enable subscribers to use the Extended Absence Greeting (EAG) feature and to edit greetings. See SA - Modular Messaging - Advanced Properties Dialog Box.

Enable the Multilingual Call Answer feature to allow subscribers to record optional greetings in different languages. This feature allows callers to hear greetings in their preferred language only.If a greeting rule triggers playback of an optional greeting to a caller, the system plays the optional greeting in the caller's preferred language, if that recorded optional greeting exists. Otherwise, the system searches for another matching rule that has a greeting recorded in the appropriate language.

From the Modular Messaging TUIs, Subscriber Options, and Web Subscriber Options, subscribers can:
  • Activate optional greetings, when Call Handling is enabled
  • Record optional greetings
  • Record multilingual optional greetings in the call answer languages that are already specified by the subscriber.
  • Set up greeting rules
  • Activate or de-activate an EAG

Mailbox Initialization Mailbox Initialization is a feature that plays instructions to new subscribers the first time they open their mailboxes. These instructions guide subscribers through the process of changing their password and recording their spoken name. In addition, Modular Messaging Aria TUI subscribers can record the ’Please Hold’ prompt and personal greetings using the initialization feature. Enable New Mailbox Initialization. Personal Operator There is a system-wide operator but personal operators can be configured for individual subscribers. The personal operator is a designated mailbox or extension where the system can transfer callers for assistance when a subscriber cannot answer their calls and the personal operator's schedule is active. Select the Operator Access parameter to enable Operators for a COS. You can also select the Personal Operator Configuration parameter to allow subscribers to configure their own Personal Operator numbers. See VMSC - VMD - Telephone User Interface - Class of Service Tab.

You can configure personal operator schedules for a voice mail domain. See VMSC - VMD - Telephone User Interface - Personal Operator Schedules Tab.

Specify the Personal Operator number for a subscriber and select a schedule. See SA - Modular Messaging - Advanced Properties Dialog Box.

From the Modular Messaging TUIs, Subscriber Options, and Web Subscriber Options, subscribers can change their Personal Operator configuration.

Sorting TUI messages Modular Messaging can be configured to sort messages by urgency, time received, or message type. This sort order is used when subscribers access messages from the TUIs.

Time and greeting settings for a VMD Administrators can configure the time and greeting settings for a VMD. Languages, Encoding, and Text-to-Speech (TTS)
Audio Encoding Modular Messaging supports the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) 6.10 and G.711, A-law and µ-law (mu-law) voice encoding formats.

Display language for Subscriber Options and other clients Subscribers can change the display language for all the Avaya-supplied PC client applications, such as Outlook Thick Client, Voice Recorder, Subscriber Options screens, and so on. Multilingual Call Answer Subscribers can configure their mailboxes to support up to three languages, including Teletypewriter (TTY), for Call Answer sessions. This configuration affects the languages offered to callers, and not the subscriber. Not applicable From Subscriber Options and Web Subscriber Options, subscribers can override multilingual Call Answering defaults and select the language(s) in which the callers will hear audible prompts.

Primary language

The preferred language is the language that is used by the TUIs for voice prompts that subscribers hear when they dial into their mailbox. This language is also used if multilingual text-to-speech (TTS) conversion is requested, and the language of the text cannot be determined.

If you do not select a language, the preferred language will be the system language set up by your administrator.

Text-to-Speech (TTS) TTS conversion enables subscribers to hear their e-mail messages read over the telephone. Enable multilingual TTS and select the languages to be used for TTS. See VMSC - VMD - Languages Dialog Box. Not applicable
Messaging
Fax messaging Modular Messaging—Exchange is a fax-capable messaging solution that includes native fax resources to provide fax capability. However, Modular Messaging—Exchange continues to sppport third-party fax server. Subscribers can now send an MM fax from any print-capable application.

Voice messaging Voice messaging enables subscribers to create, receive, and forward voice messages.

Subscribers that are not enabled for voice messaging cannot receive Call Answer messages and cannot use the TUI to access their mailboxes. However, they can still use an e-mail or Web client to create, forward, and receive messages.

Select the Send Messages parameter to enable voice messaging for a COS. See VMSC - VMD - Telephone User Interface - Class of Service Tab.

You can generate an input file listing the subscribers for whom you wish to enable voice mail. You can then automate the administration of the listed subscribers. See User Listing Tool (FEDBQuery) & Voice Mail Enabler (VMEnable).

Addressing and Octel Analog Networking
Dial by Name Dial by Name is a method of addressing that allows callers to spell a recipient's name on the telephone keypad. Enable Dial by Name for a COS. See VMSC - VMD - Telephone User Interface - Class of Service Tab.

Octel Analog Networking (OAN) OAN enables subscribers to send and receive messages to and from subscribers of the following systems:
  • Unified Messenger—Exchange
  • Octel 250/350 that use OAN
  • Octel 200/300 that use OAN

OAN is not supported with H.323 and analog integrations.

Message or Call Notification
Call Me With Call Me enabled, Modular Messaging calls subscribers at a designated telephone number or telephone list, when subscribers receive a message that meets subscriber-specified criteria.

Call Screening from Automated Attendant Call screening requires callers to announce themselves before subscribers answer their calls. Subscribers can then decide whether to take the call.

Intercom Paging Intercom Paging allows Modular Messaging to page subscribers when the subscribers are not at their desks. Once subscribers are paged, they must return to their extensions to receive the call. If subscribers do not respond to the page, the system transfers the callers to their mailboxes.

Message Waiting Indicator MWI is a method of alerting subscribers when messages that meet specified criteria arrive in their mailbox. Subscribers are alerted by either a lamp indicator on the telephone or an audible tone (stutter dialtone) when they pick up the receiver.

Notify Me With Notify Me, subscribers can configure the system to send an e-mail, each time they receive a message that meets certain criteria. The subscriber can then call the Modular Messaging system in order to review the message.

Message Privacy
Message privacy Message privacy defines the way private messages are handled on a Modular Messaging system.

Subscribers and callers can set messages as private using the TUIs, email clients, and one-X Speech Access. Subscribers can also tell whether messages are private when they are being reviewed.

Data Collection Tool (DCT) With the enhanced DCT, the technician,
project planner, or system administrator can now specify all the information, that was included in the installation planning forms for previous releases, using the DCT screens.

SPIRIT Agent This feature provides support for alarming and connectivity without the use of the Avaya Remote Maintenance Board (RMB). The RMB is replaced with the Avaya SPIRIT Agent on the MAS. The Avaya SPIRIT Agent relays alarms, SNMP traps and software inventory records to Avaya Technical Support and customers' Network Management Systems. Administer alarm notification for a VMD. Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) SNMP allows administrators to manage and monitor network elements.

Other features
Personal Distribution Lists (PDLs) A PDL is a labeled collection of addresses that subscribers create and save for later use. Messages that are addressed to the list are sent to all the multiple addresses (list members) within the list.

Subscribers can create a PDL only from the TUIs. However, subscribers can modify an Exchange distribution list to a PDL by using Subscriber Options or Web Subscriber Options.

Subscribers can address messages to PDLs from the TUIs and the Outlook client.

Multiple Time Zones This feature enables administrators to select and assign time zones to a group of subscribers within a VMD.

Administrators can assign subscribers a COS that uses the system time zone. Or, classes-of-service that use time zones that are different from the system time zone can be set up and assigned to the appropriate groups of subscribers.

Offline access to messages When an MAS goes offline, Modular Messaging allows subscribers to continue to access Call Answer messages. Subscribers must use the TUI to retrieve message.
