the Switch does not display anything when I connect via serial

Did you control serial communication settings on you computer? Have a look at 4500 series quick setup guide.
After connecting you computer to the switch hit STRG+Y

It is also worth to check if the Serial console is enabled on the switch. If you are able to Telnet to the switch.
command from the Global configuration mode
#serial-console <unit 1-8> enable
Also check the serial connection settings as suggested by fwilkepcs.

What kind of terminal emulation software are you using?
- PuTTy?
- Hyperterminal?
- Teraterm?

Is this during boot up? If the switch is already up just press Ctrl + Y to bring up the CLI.
