Default SSH on 96x1

Our network team threw a wrench in our IP deployment. They won't configure anymore IP Tel until they get SSH access to the telephones internal switch.
They want to be able to view errors, stats on the switchport from the phone to the connected PC.
Is it true that only Avaya support has this access?

Yes, 96x1 phone does have SSH capability to collect some of the logs from the phone.

96x1 has capability but do customers have access?
What we loose in deploying VoIP is visibility to the PC connected to the phones switch. We have been looking at SNMP and Syslog but after doing a snmp walk on a phone we still don't see any statistics or traffic on the swithcport facing the PC.
