    Avay 1608 Phones Died

We have about 50 Avaya 1608 phones which have been all working fine, however lately a good few of them have just been dying. Switching off and we cannot get them to switch back on.

They are powered by POE Cat 5 cables and have been working for a few years without any bother.

To troubleshoot we have replaced the cables to the wall port, tried another wall port which is known to work, and even tried connecting directly in to the Avaya phone switch. So the fault is definitely with the phones.

On a few occasions we have connected them up and left them connected for a few days like over the weekend etc, then they have came back on but this is completely random and as soon as you disconnect they will not power on even if they are left connected up for a few more days.

Has anyone any ideas on how to get these back on or are they just dead? We currently have over 16 dead phones which would be good if we can get them back on instead of just buying new ones.

    Cheers Adam

Avaya 1608 phones die after power outage

I have two customers that continually have 1608 phones that die. During a power outage over 40 phones died. The other customer is constantly replacing 1608 phones and sending to a company for repair. Sometimes the repair company can fix.... sometimes not. Is there any fix for this? Is it a problem with the 1608 phones? Firmware update? and direction or answers would be helpful

We also have the same problem at work. About thirty phones lost to this. We are replacing the phones with the 1608-I model. We have had this issue looked at by different parties. One suggestion we got was to separate the electrical and LAN cabling in the wall trunking(Possible cause of damage is electromagnetic induction in this case).

Also, one had suggested that the firmware on the phones somehow got corrupted. We are at a loss with this whole Avaya installation. Maybe in future we well pull the plug and install an entirely different IP phone setup.

Let me know what you think guys.

I really don't understand, according to our CRM software we sold 2965 "old" types 1608 phones and only 43 has been send for repair of which 21 died due to lightning and we sold well over 4000 1608I phones and we had three DOAs and 17 sudden death and 18 bad voice phones.
Not a bad score compared with the other brands we sell.
But only the complainers respond on this topic I guess.

Question is : what equipment do you use to power the phones, low voltage or too high voltage may cause the problems you have which can be the result of poor(read cheap) PoE switches or PoE bricks. We only use HP and Avaya PoE switches and Avaya PoE bricks.

If you have that much problems with the phones then raise a case with Avaya Support.

              Hi Havel,

              Hi,

We power the phones through PoE on Cisco 2960 and 3560 switches.

1608 Phones die after about 4 years

                Hi All,
Anyone ever find a solution to the 1608 IP phones dying?

I maintain a large customer's Avaya switches and phones with 46xx,9608's and 16xx's and have had a good 100 or more of these 1608's die in the last year or so.

It seems that after they reach about 4 years of life and they are unplugged or have a power loss for any reason that they won't power back up.
I have no problems with the 1608-I or 1616 phones. They are all powered by Cisco switches.

                Thanks for feedback.
