System Administration

This topic has the following information:

Installing Software

You can install or upgrade the messaging software using the Software Installation link, which is under Software Management.

  • Under Software Management, click Software Installation link.
  • Please provide the path on the LAN from where you would like to install or upgrade your local server.
  • Click Continue. Before an upgrade the system suggests that you take a total system backup since data could be lost in case of a failure.
  • Do a complete system backup and continue with installation / upgradation.

Verifying System Installation

As part of the process of troubleshooting system problems, you can verify system installation to confirm that the system's primary software packages have been properly installed. The system information is displayed on the Verify System Install-System Verification page.

The Verify System Installation page confirms that the system's primary software packages are properly installed and verifies that a complete version of each application-specific package exists on the system. The system takes a few minutes to perform a series of background checks on the system software. The contents of each installed executable or help file, but not data files, are checked to verify they were unchanged during the lifetime of the system. Each of the primary software packages installed on the system is listed. Exceptions are noted in the output of this command.

To access and verify system installation:

The system verifies and lists details of the packages, protocols installed on the system.

Verifying System Status

The Verify System Status-System Verification page displays the following information based on your system configuration for messaging:

  • Status of each software module
  • Status of voice system
  • Number of ports purchased
  • Number of ports in service
  • Status of networking, if applicable
  • Hours of speech purchased
  • Hours of speech used

To access and verify the system status:

The system takes a few minutes to run checks on the status of the system and then displays the results on the page.

Interpreting the Results of System Status

The Communication Manager Messaging software is made up of many individual software modules. When you access the System Status page, the system requests each module to report on its status. The System Status by Module table contains the modules and explanations of related information displayed in the page. Depending on the features you purchased, the modules that you see on the System Status page can vary from those in the table

Voice Ports and Speech Storage Status

The voice system (vs) module summarizes voice port and speech storage information. The System Status for Voice Ports and Speech Storage table describes this summary information in more detail.

Viewing Installed Hardware

You can view the Installed Hardware on the System Evaluation page which lists the following :

  • Software Summary
  • Messaging Announcement Sets
  • Switch Integration
  • Feature options
  • Hardware Summary
  • System Usage Report
  • File System Usage Report
  • Auto Attendants Report

To view report after evaluating the system:

The system takes a few minutes to check the hardware installed on the system and displays the Hardware Summary on the page.

Accessing the Messaging System Software Display

To view the detailed listing of high level packages installed:

The system takes a few minutes to check the software installed on the system and displays the results on the page.

Verifying Custom Features

The messaging system has a variety of customer options features. You can verify that an optional feature is enabled (turned on) for your system by checking its status on the Messaging Custom Features page.

Note: Only certified Avaya personnel can use this page to change feature options.

To access the Messaging Custom Features:

  • Under Messaging Administration, select Features.

Turning On Customer Options

Contact your Customer Services Representative to turn on the customer options on an existing messaging system.

Monitoring the system in real time

The System Monitor page is a dynamic, real-time page that shows the current status of certain maintenance and security aspects of the system.

The following fields are displayed:

  • System Name
  • System Time
  • Web Server Status
  • Message Server Status
  • Number of Major Alarms
  • Number of Minor Alarms
  • Number of Warning Alarms
  • Number of entries in the Administrator's Log
  • Number of messaging Administrator (Fc) Log Ons

To monitor the system in real time:

Monitoring Voice Channels in real time

The messaging system automatically updates the status information provided by the Voice Channel Monitor report. The default setting for the refresh rate is 5 seconds. You can adjust this interval from 1 to 30 seconds while viewing the Voice Channel Monitor.

To display the Voice Channel Monitor:

  1. Go to the Voice Channel Monitor page.
  2. Enter the new update interval in the Refresh Rate: field. The interval can be any interval between 1 and 30 seconds.
  3. Click Display.

The Voice Channel Monitor Display page is displayed.

The table forVoice Channel Monitor Display page details the fields on this display-only screen.

Shortening the refresh rate consumes more system resources and could adversely affect system performance. Monitor your system after changing this interval to ensure that the system is performing well.

Verifying Text-to-Speech

Text-to-Speech (TTS) conversion is an optional feature that enables users who access their messaging mailboxes with the telephone to listen to a voiced rendering of Message Manager messages.

Accessing Text-to-Speech Parameters

The TTS session default is:

headers_and_bodies — the entire text component of the message is voiced.

If file attachment is included in a message, that component is not voiced. The subscriber hears only summary information regarding the size of the attached file.

To set the options for TTS sessions:

  1. Log in to the Communication Manager Messaging web page.
  2. Under Messaging Administration, click System Administration link.
  3. The system displays the Administer System Attributes and Features page.

  4. On the Multimedia Parameters text box, select the drop-down menu for Text to Speech Conversion: field.
  5. The system displays the TTS Choices menu.
  6. Select headers and bodies.
  7. TTS is used to speak text items within message headers as well as the text component of the message body.
  8. Click Save.

Calling Party Number

Depending on the switch configuration, you can hear up to 39 digits when you hear the message header from a Telephone User Interface or when you retrieve call answer messages using IMAP4 or POP3 clients.

A system administrator can activate the Calling Party Number feature from the System Administrator web page (Messaging Administration > System Administration).

Setting Privacy Enforcement Level for IMAP4 clients

If a message is marked private, then it may not be forwarded by the recipient from the Telephone User Interface.

You can set the privacy enforcement type field to email (request receiver to keep message private) or voice-mail (enforce privacy). This field only affects the IMIA interface, thus private messages are still, by default, not forward-able
from the TUI.

The privacy enforcement type feature consists of the following:

  • When attempting to send a private message out of the system via SMTP, the message is blocked.
  • When retrieving a private message via POP3 or IMAP4, by an unapproved client results in the correct header, but a canned body indicating the message is private and it may not be retrieved by the client the user is using. The canned message is localized by the language in the user's Class of Service.

Depending on the privacy enforcement level set, the system blocks a private message to a user and displays a warning message when retrieving the message from IMAP4 or POP3.

To set the privacy enforcement level for IMAP4 clients:

  1. On the System Administration Web page, under Feature Activation section, indicate whether the privacy enforcement is of the Voice style privacy or Email style privacy. The default enforcement level is Voice.

    • Select Voice. If you select Voice, message forwarding is not available through the TUI or Message Manager. Messages are only delivered or available to clients that are known to respect voice-mail style privacy.
    • Note: Most email clients (for example: IMAP4, POP3) do not restrict the forwarding of messages.

    • Select Email. If you select Email, the message is marked as private and it is up to the recipient to enforce the privacy of the message.
    • Note: IMAP4 clients determine the age of a message with the help of the aging parameter in subscriber Class-of-service.

Administering External SMTP Host

CM Messaging SMTP provides the ability to forward out-bound emails to an external SMTP relay host. The emails that are not addressed to a locally known CM Messaging server or Intuity Audix LX system that support Internet Messaging are forwarded to the SMTP relay host. The SMTP relay host delivers the email to the correct destination. If you do not specify an external SMTP relay host, the local CM Messaging SMTP server delivers the email to the correct destination.

To administer external SMTP host:

  1. On the left navigation pane, on the Server Administration list, click External Hosts.
  2. Enter the IP address, Host Name and Alias of the external SMTP Server.
  3. Click Save.
