Test targets

Each test can run between two CNA agents, or between one CNA agent and an IP address. By default, tests run between CNA agents.

Tests are also run between CNA agents in the same subzone. These tests are called intra-zone tests and have the same subzone for their source and destination. By default intra-zone testing is enabled, but you can disable it. For more information on intra-zone testing and how to disable it, see Disabling intra-zone tests.

For an example of all test targets in a specific zone hierarchy, see Example: test targets.

Tests are run for each zone that contains subzones. To test between a zone and specific IP address, CNA runs tests from each of the zone’s subzones to the target IP address. Each subzone-target IP address combination is called a cell. For more information on cells, see Cell definition.

For information on how to set an IP address as a test target, see Configuring a test. Use the target command to set the IP address that you want to test.

Important: When testing to one IP address, be careful not to overload the device or the subnet containing it. If the test rate is too high, the volume of test packets being sent to the single device may exceed that device's ability to process IP packets. Running tests to a single IP address should be used only for diagnostic purposes and only for short periods of time.

An empty zone (no subzones or CNA agents) does not participate in any tests. A zone must have CNA agents assigned to its subzones to participate in tests.

All communication is encrypted to protect from outside attacks.
