This topic assumes that the system just arrived from the factory
and you have cabled the components together, or that you have successfully
installed or updated the system software.
Because the system is not yet administered, you can access the
server only from the console (monitor) directly connected to the
server.
To log in to the system from the console:
- After you power up the machine, at the console, log
in with your appropriate login, using the corresponding default
password.
Note: On the S3400-H with integrated video and LAN model,
you might see an error message about the system event log being
full. You can ignore this message. Message Networking does not
use this log.
- When prompted, change the default password.
- As soon as you log in, the system displays the Netscape browser
with the Administration menu.
Note: If you have logged in with the highest
access, type webadmin to display the web-based administration
pages.
- The first time you log into the Netscape browser from the console,
the Netscape license agreement displays. Read the agreement, uncheck
the box labeled Display this message again, and then click Accept.
- The server displays the Administration main menu.
Checking the monitor display
Once you log in, check the quality of the monitor screen:
- If the display quality is so poor that it is difficult to do
initial administration, try to correct it using the steps below.
- If the monitor displays system administration information well
enough to do initial administration, continue with Setting
the time and date.
To adjust the monitor display:
- Click Log Off.
If the display is so poor that you cannot see the mouse pointer
well enough to exit or log off, you can exit by simultaneously
pressing Ctrl+Alt+Backspace.
- Log in at the console as monitor with the password
of monitor.
The server displays the monitor setup program.
- Attempt to find the brand name of the monitor to be used. Use
the down arrow or PageDown keys to scroll through the list of
many available monitors, or try typing the first letter of the
brand name.
- Highlight the name of the monitor that most closely matches
the model you are using.
- Tab to Set and press Enter.
The monitor screen flashes during testing and adjusting. The
cursor then returns to the localhost login prompt.
- Log in to the system as craft and see if the
display has improved.
- If the display is still poor, log in again as monitor, and select
one of the Generic monitor settings.
- If there is still no improvement, the customer must supply a
different monitor.
