Restoring backed-up MAS data (after a non-catastrophic failure)

This topic describes how to restore backed-up Messaging Application Server (MAS) data after a non-catastrophic failure.

To restore backed-up MAS data:

  1. Do one of the following:
    • If you are restoring the System State on the MAS serving as the Domain Controller, do the following:
      1. Boot the system in to Directory Services Restore Mode.
      2. Continue with Step 2.
    • If you are not restoring the System State on the MAS serving as the Domain Controller, continue with Step 2
  2. Stop all Modular Messaging (MM) voice server services:
    1. On the Desktop, double-click the Monitor icon
    2. In the left-hand pane of the Monitor Screen, select Services (Local).
    3. In the right-hand pane of the Monitor Screen, stop all MM voice server services by clicking the Stop icon for each service. MM voice server services include: Call Me Server, Fax Sender Service, Mailbox Monitor Server, Message Waiting Indicator Server, Messaging Application Server, and Tracing Server.
  3. Double-click the Backup icon on the desktop.
  4. The Backup Wizard displays.

  5. Select the Restore Wizard icon on the Welcome tab.
  6. The Restore Wizard displays.

  7. Click Next.
  8. Click Import File....
  9. Do one of the following:
    • If you are restoring the MAS serving as Domain Controller and you are in Directory Services Restore Mode, browse to the backup file you copied to the top-level of your local C: drive:
      1. Click Browse.
      2. In the Look in drop-down list, select the Local C: drive.
      3. Select the backup file that you copied to the top-level of your local C: drive.

    • If you are not in Directory Services Restore Mode, browse to the MAS backup area on the MSS and select the appropriate backup file:
      1. Type \\mss1\masbackup and click Browse.
      2. Enter your Windows domain name and dom-admin account name (DOMAIN\don-admin) and password when prompted and click OK.
      3. Select the backup file.

  10. Click Open and then click OK.
  11. The system returns to the What to Restore window.

  12. In the What to Restore window, in the left-hand pane under What to restore, expand File and select your media by expanding all of the folders.
  13. The Wizard catalogues the contents of the backup.

  14. Click the check box next to any drive, folder, or file that you want to restore.
  15. Click Next.
  16. The system displays the Restore Wizard.

  17. Click Advanced....
  18. The system displays the Restore Wizard, Where to Restore window.

  19. Select Original location from the Restore files to drop-down list and click Next.
  20. The system displays the Restore Wizard, How to Restore window.

  21. Select the Always replace the file on disk radio button and click Next.
  22. The system displays the Restore Wizard, Advanced Restore Options window.

  23. Check the Restore security and Restore junction points, not the folders and file data they reference check boxes. Leave the Restore Removable Storage database check box unchecked. Click Next.
  24. Review the restore information and click Finish.
  25. Confirm the backup file name and click OK.
  26. The Restore Progress window displays with restore information.

  27. Close the Restore Progress window when complete and then close the Backup window.
  28. Restart the system and log in using your normal administrator name and password.
