Booting the MAS Domain Controller in to Directory Services Restore Mode

This topic describes how to boot the Messaging Application Server (MAS) Domain Controller in to Directory Services Restore Mode.

You must have the Safe mode administration password in order to successfully boot in to Directory Services Restore Mode. If you do not know your Safe mode administration password, refer to the S3400 login accounts form in Appendix A of the Installation Guide (pdf). This form was completed when the system was initially installed.

To boot the MAS Domain Controller in to Directory Services Restore Mode:

  1. Copy the backup file to the local C: drive:
    1. Click Start > Run and type \\mss1\masbackup in the Open field and click OK.
    2. Enter your Windows domain name and dom-admin account name (DOMAIN\don-admin) and password when prompted and click OK.
    3. Select the backup file you want to restore and copy it.
    4. Click Start > Run and type explorer in the Open field and click OK.

      NTExplorer is launched.

    5. Expand My Computer in the left-hand pane.
    6. Select Local Disk (C:) and paste the backup file.
  2. Restart the system.
  3. While the system is restarting, press F8 when you see "Starting Windows..." at the bottom of the screen.
  4. The system displays the Windows 2000 Advanced Options Menu.

  5. Using the up and down arrow keys, highlight Directory Services Restore Mode (Windows 2000 domain controllers only) and press Enter.
  6. The system restarts in Directory Services Restore Mode and the login screen appears.

  7. Enter Administrator in the User name field.
  8. Enter your Safe mode administration password in the Password field.
  9. Click OK.
  10. The system displays a message confirming that Windows is running in safe mode.

  11. Click OK.
  12. Continue with Restoring backed-up MAS data (after a non-catastrophic failure).
