DVD drive replacement

The Avaya message servers use different DVD devices for removable-media drives as follows:

  • Messaging Application Server (MAS): A Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) drive is used primarily to load system programs and updates. This is a read-only device; data is backed up on the MSS's DVD.
  • Message Storage Server (MSS): A Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) Random Access Memory (RAM) drive provides read/writable backup information for the system. The same DVD-RAM drive is used in both the MSS-S (standard) and MSS-H (high-availability) configurations. However, the internal cabling varies slightly between the different machines due to the hard-disk drive arrangement.

Caution!
You must replace a DVD drive with one of the same type, or the system will not work correctly. For example, you must replace the DVD player in the MAS only with another DVD player.

Replacing a DVD drive

To replace the removable-media drive in a message server:

  1. Verify that the replacement equipment is on site and appears to be in usable condition, with no obvious shipping damage.
  2. Verify that the replacement equipment is the same type of device as the one you are replacing (either a read/writable or read-only DVD as appropriate).
  3. Remove the drive cage.
  4. Replace the DVD drive.
  5. Reinstall the drive cage and return the system to service.
  6. Verify operation of the new drive.

Replace the DVD drive

To replace a DVD drive:

  1. Remove the 4 screws that secure the faulty drive to the drive cage (2 per side). See Removing or replacing a DVD drive.
  2. Slide the old drive out of the drive cage. Set it aside.
  3. Set up the replacement drive to be a master or slave on the IDE bus as follows:
    • MAS DVD player: Always set up the read-only DVD to be a slave. See DVD jumper settings.
      1. Locate the mode select connector (the 10-pin connector next to the IDE signal connector).
      2. Move the jumper to the 2 pins labeled Slave.
    • MSS DVD-RAM: Set the jumpers as noted. See DVD jumper settings.
      1. Locate the mode select connector (the 6-pin connector next to the IDE signal connector).
      2. Move the jumper to connect the appropriate 2 pins as follows:
        • MSS-S: Move the jumper to the center 2 pins labeled Slave.
        • MSS-H: Move the jumper to the 2 end pins labeled Master.
  4. Insert the new drive into the drive cage.
  5. Reattach the 4 screws to secure it in place.
  6. Note: Be sure to insert the screws so that the drive is offset about 1 inch from the front of the machine.

  7. Reinstall the drive cage and return the system to service.

Verify new drive operation

MAS: To verify that a new DVD player is working:

  1. Insert a CD or DVD into the new drive.
  2. Verify that the system can access the disc.
  3. Note: If the replacement DVD is a different model of drive, you may be prompted to load new drivers.

MSS: To verify that a new DVD-RAM drive is working correctly:

  1. Insert a writable DVD disc into the new drive.
  2. Verify that the system can read from and write to the new drive by doing a backup.
    1. From the Messaging Administration main menu, select Utilities > Backup and Restore > Backup.
    2. To verify your results, select View Attributes of Backup Media. See Backing up system files for more information.
