Overview of system monitoring and maintenance

Modular Messaging provides the following features and tools for you to use to monitor and maintain your system:

  • Performing basic MSS maintenance: These are maintenance tasks that are performed on the MSS, such as starting and stopping the messaging system.
  • Backing up the system: Modular Messaging allows you to back up critical MAS and MSS data. The unattended backup automatically saves critical Message Storage Server (MSS) and Messaging Application Server (MAS) data. The attended backup allows you to complete a full system backup of Message Storage Server (MSS) and Messaging Application Server (MAS) data at any time.
  • Managing the MSS software: Managing the Message Storage Software (MSS) software includes tasks such as updating software and viewing the list of software installed on the server.
  • Overview of system logs: Logs record events that are useful for preventive maintenance, for diagnosing problems and troubleshooting the server, and for spotting trends or estimating future needs.
  • Performing hardware maintenance: These topics provide information about maintaining the system hardware, including server maintenance, safety, and hardware diagnostic tests.
  • Overview of system reports: Reports display data about messaging traffic, others display information about mailbox usage and logins, and still others display alarms and events data.
  • Monitoring system performance and status: Modular Messaging provides a number of ways for you to monitor and verify status and performance of the MAS and MSS servers, including running audits, verifying installation, and using the MAS Performance Monitor.
  • Troubleshooting the system: These topics include information you can use to troubleshoot areas of the system, including general system issues, network connectivity, and system features (such as Enhanced-List Application).
  • Recovering the system: These topics provide information about recovering the MSS and MAS.

The Maintenance checklist provides a list of tasks that you should complete on a regular basis to keep the Modular Messaging system operating properly.
