IDE drive replacement

An Avaya Messaging Application Server (MAS) or a supplementary tracing server contains a single Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) disk drive. If the drive fails, the server cannot function until the drive is replaced, the operating system is reinstalled, and crucial data is restored from the system data that was backed up.

Replacing the IDE drive

To replace the single IDE (hard disk) drive in an MAS:

  1. Verify that the replacement equipment is on site and appears to be in usable condition, with no obvious shipping damage.
  2. Remove the drive cage.
  3. Replace and restore the IDE drive as described below.

Replace and restore the IDE drive

To replace an IDE drive and restore system data:

  1. Place the drive cage assembly on a clean, static-free surface.
  2. Remove the 4 mounting screws that secure the disk drive to the bottom of the drive cage. See figure Removing or replacing an IDE drive.
  3. Caution!
Support the drive when you remove the screws. Otherwise, the drive might drop when it comes loose.

  4. Lift out the faulty drive. Set it aside.
  5. Remove the new IDE drive from the anti-static bag. Do not touch the circuit board surface.
  6. Configure the replacement drive as the IDE bus master.
    1. Locate the 9-pin master/slave connector on the back of the drive. See figure IDE drive jumper settings.
    2. Place a jumper over the set of pins at either end of this connector to set up this drive as a master. Figures on the drive identify the different jumper settings.
  7. Insert the new IDE drive in the drive cage. The connector on the disk drive must face the back of the cage.
  8. Reattach the 4 mounting screws to secure the drive to the bottom of the cage.
  9. Reinstall the drive cage and restore power to the server.
  10. Return the server to service by reinstalling the operating system, configuring the server, and restoring crucial data from system backup files. For complete information, see Installation and Upgrades (pdf).
