DVD drive replacement

The Avaya S3400-family MAS and supplementary tracing servers use a Digital Versatile Disc Read Only Memory (DVD-ROM) drive as their removable-media device. This DVD player is a read-only device.

Replacing a DVD drive

To replace the removable-media drive in a server:

  1. Verify that the replacement equipment is on site and appears to be in usable condition, with no obvious shipping damage.
  2. Remove the drive cage.
  3. Replace the DVD drive.
  4. Reinstall the drive cage and return the server to service.
  5. Verify operation of the new drive.

Replace the DVD drive

To replace a DVD drive:

  1. Remove the 4 screws that secure the faulty drive to the drive cage (2 per side). See figure Removing or replacing a DVD drive.
  2. Slide the faulty drive out of the drive cage. Set it aside.
  3. Set up the replacement drive to be a slave on the IDE bus. See figure DVD jumper settings.
    1. Locate the mode select connector (the 10-pin connector next to the IDE signal connector).
    2. Move the jumper to the 2 pins labeled Slave.
  4. Insert the new drive into the drive cage.
  5. Reattach the 4 screws that came with the new DVD player to secure it in place.
  6. Note: Be sure to insert the screws so the drive is offset about 1 inch from the front of the server.

  7. Reinstall the drive cage and return the server to service.

Verify new drive operation

To verify that a new DVD player is working:

  1. Insert a CD or DVD into the new drive.
  2. Verify that the server can access the disk:
    1. Double-click My Computer.
    2. Double-click the D: drive.
    3. Verify that the information on the disk is correctly displayed.

Note: If the replacement DVD is a different model of drive, the system might prompt you to load new drivers. Follow the instructions on the screen.
