Removing the drive cage

You must remove the drive cage to:

To remove the drive cage:

  1. Shut down the system and unplug the AC power cords.
  2. Remove the front bezel and top cover.
  3. Disconnect the signal and power cables to all drives in the cage assembly.
    • MSS-S: See figure MSS-S drive cage cabling.
      1. Unplug the power connectors from the DVD, upper drive, and lower drive.
      2. Unplug the 80-pin IDE ribbon cable from the DVD and upper drive (hdc).
      3. Unplug the 80-pin IDE ribbon cable from the lower drive (hda).
    • MSS-H: See figure MSS-H drive cage cabling.
      1. Unplug the power connector for the DVD, and the two power connectors for the SCSI RAID backplane.
      2. Unplug the J6 (3-pin) and J7 (10-pin) jumper cables from the SCSI RAID backplane.
      3. Unplug the 80-pin IDE ribbon cable from the DVD drive.
      4. Unplug the SCSI ribbon cable from the SCSI RAID backplane.
    • MAS: See figure MAS drive cage cabling.
      1. Unplug the power connectors from the DVD player and lower drive (hda).
      2. Unplug the 80-pin IDE ribbon cable from the DVD and the lower drive.
  4. Remove the drive cage retaining screws. See figure Removing or replacing the drive cage.
    1. Remove the 4 screws from the front of the drive cage.
    2. Remove the 2 flathead screws from the side of the chassis, located about 6 inches from the front of the cage.
  5. Note: For some rack-mount units, you might need to loosen loosen or remove some of the screws that attach the rail handle to the MAS before you can slide out the drive cage.

  6. Gently slide the drive cage assembly forward and out of the unit.
  7. Place the drive cage assembly on a clean, static-free surface.
  8. Replace the appropriate drive:
