Why can't people use names rather than handles?

Not our first choice, agreed. This is directly related to how entitlements are granted via user handle/login name.
This is on our list of enhancemnets to be improved in the near future. Although, IT is a bit backed up working through the Nortel acuquisition.

For PRIORITY Service, create a Service Request online at http://support.avaya.com. Select Service Requests > Create Service Requests

May I suggest using the Signature option located under the User CP.Monique | Avaya Support Web Team | Avaya Client Services
