    IP Telephony Basic Discussion

I am new with this field.I have to develop a IP Telepohny system having 50 IP telephone system and 50 Computers having IP Calling Software. So here is my understanding. Can anyone help me If I am Wrong.

    I will start form first.

I have a PSTN Line and I have to used Gateway from PSTN to Ethernet.

Or I can Use Server rather then Gateway?

Then I will connect all Phones to the Switch and Switch to Server/Gateway.

I assign local number to every phone.

So now when Call comes operator will pick it and forward to the desired person.I need server for this one?

One more question What is the purpose of IP Converged server?

    Hi,

What you've outlined above seems to be right.

If you have traditional PSTN lines (PRI or analog) you'll need a gateway as it will do the conversion from the "old telephony" technologies to VoIP (transcoding) which allows to receive calls on your softphones etc.

If going for SIP trunks, then you don't necessarily need a gateway assuming no transcoding needs to be done between your system and the provider (codecs need to match on the circuit they're giving you and usually it's going to be G.711 for uncompressed voice).

I'd say going for an IP Office (One-X enabled) will be the fastest and painless & close to "out-of-the-box" as you can get.

I'll leave the gurus to step in if they wish.

Hope this helps. There's quite a bit of stuff to this whole VoIP show but you'll get the hang of it with time.

    Cheers.
