IP Office basic (partner version) voice mail problems again

Yesterday we installed a 10 phone Partner Version (aka IP Office basic edition). Before we started programming we upgraded the SD card from 7.0 to 7.0.27 This is suppose to be a stable release.
When we installed this and plugged in phones we were showing the customer how the voice mail boxes worked and the voice mail would not work. The retrieve buttons would not work. Our techs were told to reformat the SD card, which took time and made us look bad in front of our customer. We re-formatted the card and now it works.

What should we do different? reformat a new card before we up grade it? What are others doing?

We dropped by Friday to check on the customer and their intercom was just 1 way. We had seen this with Release 8.0 several times but never with 7.0.27. So we spent a bit reformating their sd card a second time and then the customer had to re-record their voice mail.
Certainly we are doing something wrong or getting defective sd cards or something in the middle. What are others seeing out there? What are we doing wrong?
