Explanation on the how the functionality VRRP and RSMLT works in the core.

Problem Clarification

Customer needs to understand how the functionality RSMLT, VRRP works on ERS 8800/8600

Cause

N/A

Solution

VRRP:- In most of the IP networks end stations are statically configured with a single router address as a gateway.Suppose there are two ERS boxes with the IST enabled and  suppose there is a triangle topology so what VRRP does it uses a virtual gateway for all the clients on the ethernet.

If any of the box wents down the other box routes the traffic on behalf of the box that went down.

VRRP Backupmaster:-

This is another functionality which is used with the SMLT. Both the boxes  learn the arp on behalf of each other and both the boxes are active  at the same time. Traffic wont be crossing the IST as second box already has the MAC address for the other box.

RSMLT :- It was developed to provide the subsecond failover for traffic routed through the core of the network.

1. All three or four router in the core can run IGP such as RIP or OSPF
2. Takes care of resiliency
3. NO VRRP and ECMP is requires in the core VLAN
4. Multiple RSMLT core VLANs are supported per switch
5. RSMLT is enabled only on CORE VLANS that cross the IST.
6. It works on per vlan bases

SMLT is a way to ensure that traffic gets accross the VLAN by providing redundant switches and redundant links.

RSMLT is a way toi ensure that the traffic can be routed off the VLAN by adding the router redundancy. It lets you to configure a pair of ERS 8600 to actively answer the traffic for each other mac address
