Details

VSP 9000 Power Supply LED on the CP is RED indicating a FAULT, but 9006 Power Supply LEDs are GREEN.

9006 AC Power Supply LED indicators are GREEN.
CP indicator for that Power Supply is RED, indicating a FAULT.
Log events indicate that the Power Supply is marked as bad; however, power is being supplied.

Log events:

HW WARNING Power Supply PS 6 is marked as bad. Please check power cable or replace with a working power supply

During another event, the AC LED on the Power Supply was OFF.

Problem Clarification

There is an inconsistency in the power supply status as reported by the supply and the CP module, with the supply reporting good status (GREEN), but the CP module reporting a power supply issue (RED). The type of power source (110, 220, 208 VAC) is not a factor.

During another event, the AC LED on the Power Supply was OFF.

Cause

Due to an internal component change, there may be false reporting of LED indicators with specific Power Supply serial numbers, when the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of the input AC source exceeds 5% (>5% THD,). As long as the THD values of the AC Voltage are within industry standard (5% THD), the VSP 9006 Power Supplies will perform normally.

The serial number (date code) of units that may experience the issue are between 11LD16xxxxxx and 11LD37xxxxxx. [Manufacture year 2011, between weeks 16 (April) and 37 (September). LD is the manufacture location code.]

Power supplies not within the affected serial number range do not have the defect. The defect is documented with wi01103706.

Power supplies within the affected serial number range will have a revision of 1:6 on the label and internal programming, to identify fixed units that have enhanced immunity to a distorted AC source.

Solution

Replace the Power Supply via the standard RMA process.

The following Known Limitation was added to the VSP 9000 v3.3.4.0 Release Notes:

VSP 9000 Power Supply LEDs are in a non-deterministic state when the CP Power Supply indicator is lit RED indicating fault. There will be log messages indicating the Power Supply fault event but the PS LEDs may be RED, GREEN or OFF.
