Updating system software using downloaded software

This procedure provides steps for downloading service pack software from Avaya's support site and performing a software update on the Message Networking system.

Important! It is critical that the machine to which you download the Message Networking software update have the latest virus detection software installed.

Notes:

  • If you are installing a service pack, follow the installation procedure included in the Change Description for the service pack.
  • You can also perform a software update using a CD-ROM shipped from Avaya. For information on performing a software update using an Avaya-provided CD-ROM, see Updating system software via CD-ROM.
  • Updating the system software requires a system restart. Plan to do the installation during low usage hours.
  • If you want to update the existing language software or add new language software, see Installing switch connection software and language packages.

Download the software update

Complete the following steps to update the system:

  1. Download the Message Networking software update from the Avaya Support site:
    1. Go to http://www.avaya.com/support and then navigate to the Message Networking page.
    2. Access the software downloads area.
    3. Select the software update you want to download.
    4. When prompted whether you want to open the file or save it, click Save.
    5. Specify a destination for the downloaded software and then click Save.
The software is downloaded to the specified location.
  2. Transfer the downloaded software to CD or use an FTP program to transfer the downloaded software to the Message Networking system.

If you use FTP to transfer the downloaded software, be aware of the following:

    • Make sure that you set the transfer type to binary
    • You need to use the icftp login and corresponding password when transferring files to the Message Networking using the FTP feature.
    • Some FTP programs allow you to change the case of the filename you are transferring. Do not change the case of the filename; you must preserve the original case of the filename that you are transferring for the software update to be successful.
    • Message Networking systems are shipped with the FTP feature deactivated by default. If you activate FTP to use it for a task, such as exporting a report, it is recommended that you deactivate it when you complete the task.
    • For information on Message Networking's FTP support, see Message Networking File Transfer Protocol support.
  3. Complete the procedure to install the downloaded software via CD or LAN. If you used FTP to transfer the downloaded software to Message Networking, install the software via LAN.
