Fans provide cooling for the components in each machine. All fans
installed in S3400-H machines are considered "hot swappable"
and can be replaced while the system is in service.
The following fans can be replaced on site:
Replacing a chassis fan
Two fans are mounted at the front of every machine chassis for
cooling purposes.
To replace a fan on the front of the chassis:
- Verify that the replacement equipment is on site and appears
to be in usable condition, with no obvious damage.
- Remove the old fan.
- Install the new fan.
Remove the old fan
To remove a faulty chassis fan:
- Remove the bezel (plastic cover) on the front of the chassis.
See Removing or replacing the front bezel.
- Press down on the two tabs on the top of the bezel.
- Rock the bezel forward, and then lift it out.
- Identify the fan that is spinning too slowly or not at all.
- Loosen the retaining screw at the top of the faulty fan.
- Tip the fan forward and lift it out. See Removing
or replacing a chassis fan.
- Unplug the power cable to the fan.
- Set the old fan aside.
Install the new fan
To install a new fan in the chassis:
- Hold down the latch on the new fan power connector.
- Plug the power cable for the fan into the 3-pin connector inside
the chassis.
Note: The new fan begins to spin as soon as power is
connected.
- Insert the tab at the bottom of the fan into the slot in the
chassis.
- Tip the new fan back into place. See Removing
or replacing a chassis fan.
- Tighten the retaining screw at the top of the fan.
Note: For safety reasons, tighten the retaining
screw with a screwdriver until it cannot be loosened by
hand.
- Replace the bezel (plastic cover) on the front of the chassis.
See Removing or replacing the front bezel.
- Insert the bottom of the bezel into the chassis.
- Push the bezel upright until the two upper tabs snap into
place under the top cover.
Replacing the SCSI fan tray
The S3400-H configuration includes a hot swappable two-fan tray
as part of the SCSI RAID disk-drive assembly.
Replace the fan tray
To replace the SCSI fan tray:
- Verify that the replacement equipment is on site and appears
to be in usable condition, with no obvious damage.
- Remove the front bezel. See Removing or
replacing the front bezel.
- Press down on the two tabs on the top of the bezel.
- Rock the bezel forward, then lift it out.
- Loosen the retaining screw on the handle (latch) for the SCSI
fan tray.
- Open the latch to unseat the old fan tray, and then pull it
by the handle from the drive cage. See Replacing
a SCSI fan tray.
- Position the new SCSI fan tray in the correct orientation in
the chassis.
- Gently slide the fan tray into the machine.
- Close the latch to seat it firmly in place.
- Tighten the retaining screw.
Note: For safety reasons, tighten the retaining screw
with a screwdriver until it cannot be loosened by hand.
Verify operation of the new fan tray
To verify operation of the SCSI fan tray:
- Loosen the retaining screw for the chassis fan immediately next
to the SCSI fan tray.
- Tip the fan forward and lift it out. See figure Removing
or replacing a chassis fan.
- Look into the chassis, and verify that both fans in the SCSI
fan tray are spinning.
- Replace the chassis fan and tighten its retaining screw.
Note: For safety reasons, tighten the retaining
screw with a screwdriver until it cannot be loosened by
hand.
- Replace the front bezel:
- Insert the bottom of the bezel into the chassis.
- Push the bezel upright until the two upper tabs snap into
place under the top cover
