Performing remote subscriber updates manually

You might need to run a remote update manually to populate the subscriber database quickly or to correct database inconsistencies discovered during an audit.

Caution!

Remote updates have a significant impact on system performance. Remote updates of more than a few hundred subscribers should be scheduled during non-prime time hours. Even if traffic is light during a remote update, users will likely experience slow response time to commands and may hear the "Please wait" prompt multiple times, or even "I'm sorry, there is a problem with the system."

Large remote updates of more than 10,000 subscribers may require several hours to complete. The length of time to complete the update depends on the type of MM system (Standard or High Availability), number of subscribers to be updated, and the number of MASs in the system. Standard Availability systems and systems with multiple MASs will require longer to update. It is recommended that remote updates of 50,000 subscribers or more be scheduled over a weekend. The following numbers are provided to help estimate the total time required for a remote update:

  • The update rate on a Standard Availability system with one MAS is approximately 3000 updates per hour.
  • The update rate on a High Availability system with one MAS is approximately 6000 updates per hour.

To run a remote update manually:

  1. Start at the Messaging Administration main menu and select:
  2. Global Administration
         Messaging Administration

The system displays the SSH User Authentication dialog box. Enter your login, for example, sa or vm, in the User name field and your password in the Password field. Click Login. The system then displays the Messaging command prompt screen.

  3. Test the network connection to the remote system:
    1. Enter test network_connection at the enter command prompt.
    2. The system displays the Test Network Connection screen.

    3. Enter the name of the remote machine in the Machine Name field.

Tip: To see a list of remote systems, enter list machines at the enter command prompt.

    4. Press F3 (Save).

The system checks the network connection between the local system and the specific remote system. The system displays SUCCESS in the Results field if the test was successful or FAILED if it was unsuccessful. If the test failed, the system displays the reason for the failure under Error Reason.

  4. Enter list measurements feature day at the enter command prompt.
  5. The system displays the Feature Daily Traffic screen.

  6. Write down the current number of remote subscribers.
  7. Press F1 (Cancel).
  8. The cursor returns to the command line.

  9. Enter get remote-updates remote_machine_name at the enter command prompt, where remote_machine_name is the name of a system that shares the network with your local system.
  10. The system displays the Remote Update Request screen.

  11. Press F3 (Enter) to begin the remote update, or press F1 (Cancel) to not start the update.
  12. The system begins the remote update.

Caution! The update might take some time, possibly hours, depending on the number of subscribers on the remote system. Avoid running the remote update during prime time hours. See the Caution statement at the top of this topic for more information.

  13. Check that the remote subscribers are listed on the local system.
  14. Enter list measurements feature day at the enter command prompt.
  15. The system displays the Feature Daily traffic screen.

  16. Verify the new number of remote subscribers.
  17. Enter display administrator's-log at the enter command prompt.
  18. The system displays the Administrator's Log screen.

  19. View the Administrator's Log to verify that no conflicts or problems occurred with the remote update.
  20. Press F1 (Cancel).
  21. The cursor returns to the command line, and the system displays the following message:

    Command Successfully Completed.

  22. If you are done running a remote update, enter exit at the enter command prompt, press Enter, and click Return to Main.

  23. Note: You might also want to view a report of remote subscribers using the web-based administration pages to verify the new number of remote subscribers. See Viewing a report of remote subscribers for more information.
