Burstable Rate Contracts

Burstable-rate contracts vary from month to month depending on how much data passes through the link during the billing period.

How the billable rate is calculated is a negotiable item that varies from contract to contract. You need to tell the CNA system how your ISP determines this rate, by adding the usage-reporting formula, usage-reporting percentile and multiple instances of the usage-reporting cost commands to the link configuration block.

As an example, assume a flexible contract that specifies a price of $2,400 per month for up to 5 megabits per second (mbps), $4,800 per month if usage reaches between 5 and 10 mbps, $9,000 per month if usage hits between 10 and 20 mbps, and $15,000 if usage gets up to between 20 and 45 mbps. See Table 5:

Table 5:  Burstable contract
Megabits per second (mbps)
Rate

0–5

$2,400

5–10

$4,800

10–20

$9,000

20–45

$15,000

To model this contract in the CNA configuration, add each of the following commands while still in link configuration mode:

Avaya_ANS (config-engine-link)# usage-reporting cost 5 2400

Avaya_ANS (config-engine-link)# usage-reporting cost 10 4800

Avaya_ANS (config-engine-link)# usage-reporting cost 20 9000

Avaya_ANS (config-engine-link)# usage-reporting cost 45 15000

The smallest configured tier will be used to plot the Minimum Commit graph line in the Billing trend report. See the discussion of the Billing report in Chapter 2: Reports of the CNA Reporting Guide.
