Replacing S3400-H removable-media drives

In the S3400-H, a Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) Random Access Memory (RAM) drive provides read/writable backup information for the system.

Caution! You must replace a removable-media drive with one of the same type, or the system will not work correctly. For example, you must replace a CD-ROM drive only with another CD-ROM drive.

Replacing a CD or DVD drive

To replace the removable-media drive in a message server:

  1. Verify that the replacement equipment is on site and appears to be in usable condition, with no obvious damage.
  2. Verify that the replacement equipment is the same type of device as the one you are replacing (either a CD or DVD as appropriate).
  3. Remove the drive cage.
  4. Replace the removable-media drive.
  5. Reinstall the drive cage and return the system to service.
  6. Verify operation of the new drive.

Replace the removable-media drive

To replace the CD or DVD drive:

  1. Remove the 4 screws that secure the faulty drive to the drive cage (2 per side). See Removing or replacing a CD or DVD drive.
  2. Slide the old drive out of the drive cage. Set it aside.
  3. Set up the replacement drive to be a master or slave on the IDE bus as follows:
    • CD-ROM: Always set up a CD to be a slave. See CD or DVD jumper settings.
      1. Locate the mode select connector (the 6-pin connector next to the IDE signal connector).
      2. Move the jumper to the center 2 pins labeled "Slave."
    • DVD-RAM: Set the jumpers as noted. See CD or DVD jumper settings.
      1. Locate the mode select connector (the 6-pin connector next to the IDE signal connector).
      2. Move the jumper to the 2 end pins labeled "Master."
  4. Insert the new drive into the drive cage.
  5. Reattach the 4 screws that came with the new media drive to secure it in place.
  6. Note: Be sure to insert the screws into the same holes that you removed them from, so that the drive is offset about 1 inch from the front of the machine.

  7. Reinstall the drive cage and return the system to service.

Verify new drive operation

To verify that a new drive is working:

  1. Insert a CD or DVD into the new drive.
  2. Verify that the system can read from and write to the new drive by doing a backup:
    1. From the Messaging Administration main menu, select Utilities > Backup and Restore > Backup.
    2. To verify your results, select View Attributes of Backup Media. See Managing the backup media for more information.
