This topic describes how to set up a PPP connection between your
Message Storage Server (MSS) and a remote PC to enable remote administration
outside your intranet firewall.
To set up a PPP connection for remote administration, complete
the following procedures in the order presented:
Setting up the sappp password and password
aging
Note: The sappp password might have been
set up by the technician during the initial installation. Refer
to your PPP logins, passwords, and IP addresses form in your
Installation Guide (pdf) for
more information. If the sappp password and password aging was
set up during installation, continue with Activating
the modem. |
To set up the sappp password and password aging:
- At the console (using MSS's shared monitor and keyboard), login
in as sa and set up a password for the sappp login. See Changing
a system password for information about how to set up a password.
- Set up password aging for the sappp password. See Setting
administrator password aging for more information.
- Continue with Activating the modem.
Activating the modem
Use this procedure to activate the USB modem to be used for the
PPP connection.
To activate the USB modem:
- Start at the Messaging Administration main
menu and select:
Basic System Administration
Modem and Terminal Administration
Install
Modem/Terminal Software
The system displays the Install Modem/Terminal Software page.
- Verify that a USB modem is connected. If Yes
appears in the USB Modem Connected? column for USB Modem 1 or
USB Modem 2, the modem is connected. If No appears,
the USB modem is not connected.
- Do one of the following:
- If the USB modem is connected, continue with Setting
up the PPP server configuration on the MSS.
- If the USB modem is not connected, verify that the USB and
RJ-11 cables are properly connected. See the Installation
Guide (pdf) for more information about how to connect a USB modem.
After connecting the modem, continue with Setting up the PPP
server configuration on the MSS.
Setting up the PPP server configuration
on the MSS
Use this procedure to identify the local and remote IP addresses
that are required for remote access to the system.
To set up the PPP server configuration:
- Start at the Messaging Administration main
menu and select:
Basic System Administration
TCP/IP Administration
PPP
Server Configuration
The system displays the PPP Server Configuration page.
Note: The PPP server configuration might
have been set up by the technician during the initial installation.
Refer to your PPP logins, passwords, and IP addresses form
in your Installation Guide (pdf)
for more information. If the PPP server configuration was
set up during installation, continue with Setting up the PPP
connection on the remote machine. |
- Select IP addresses to use for the local and remote systems
and enter the addresses in the Local IP Address and Remote IP
Address fields.
Note: When selecting IP addresses, choose
addresses that are next to one another, for example, xxx.xxx.xxx.1
for the local IP address and xxx.xxx.xxx.2 for the remote
IP address. |
- Click Save.
The system displays the PPP Configuration page and displays the
PPP Config for SAPPP is successful! message in the Results column
if the IP address were accepted. If the system did not accept
the IP addresses, Click Back and Reload and return
to Step 2.
- Continue with the Setting up the PPP connection on the remote
PC.
Setting up the PPP connection on the remote
PC
You must set up a PPP connection on the remote PC that you plan
to use for remote administration. This section does not describe
in detail how to set up a PPP connection on the remote machine because
the process is different for each operating system. However, you
can use the following information as a guide when setting up the
PPP connection:
- You must know the sappp password that you set up in the Setting
up the sappp password and password aging procedure.
- You must know the phone number for the USB modem that you activated
in the Activating the modem procedure. In
addition, you may want to contact your switch administrator to
see if you need any access codes in addition to the phone number.
- Always request to show a terminal window. This allows you to
use a terminal window to log with the sappp login and password.
For example, in Windows 2000, you would check the Show Terminal
Window checkbox.
- Do not request for the system to prompt for a name and password.
For example, in Windows 2000, verify that the Prompt for name
and password, certificate, etc. checkbox is not checked.
Once you have established the PPP connection, Continue with Accessing
and logging in to the MSS.
Accessing and logging in to the MSS
Use this procedure to access and log in to the MSS using the PPP
connection that you just set up on your remote PC.
To access and log in to the MSS:
- Using your remote PC, verify that your remote machine is connected
to your MSS through the PPP connection.
- Open a web browser, such as Internet Explorer or Netscape.
- In the web browser's address field, enter http://ipaddress.
where ipaddress is the local IP address that you set
up in Setting up the PPP server configuration
on the MSS, for example, xxx.xxx.xxx.1.
- Press Enter.
The MSS security notice page displays.
- Click Continue.
- Enter your login, for example, sa or vm, in the Username field
and click Login.
Note: Do not use the sappp login and
password to log in to the system. The sappp login and password
are only used to establish the PPP connection to the MSS
from the remote PC. |
- Enter the password for your login in the Password field and
click Login.
The system logs you in and displays either the Messaging
Administration main menu for the sa login or the Messaging
Administration main menu (vm login version) for the vm login.
Important! After you have successfully
logged in to the MSS through a PPP connection, do not make
any changes to the Install Modem/Terminal Software page or
the PPP Server Configuration page. Changing the settings on
these pages could terminate your PPP connection. |
- When you are finished administering the MSS, log off the MSS
and shut down the PPP connection on the remote PC. For information
about logging out the MSS, see Logging
out of the MSS.
