Initial administration checklist

The following tables list the administration tasks that you complete after you install the Modular Messaging system. The first table lists the tasks that bring an installed Modular Messaging system into service. The second table lists additional tasks that might be necessary, depending on the Modular Messaging system configuration.

Required initial administration tasks

The following table lists the required administration tasks that bring an installed Modular Messaging system into service.

Task Comments
  1. Use the Voice Mail System Configuration (VMSC) program to enable and configure optional features as required on the messaging application server (MAS).

Use the VMSC program to enable and configure the following optional features. Some features that were enabled when during installation might need additional configuration or changes to meet the customer requirements:

  • Message privacy
  • Dial-by-Name
  • Call Me
  • Message Waiting Indicator (MWI)
  • Intercom Paging
  • Fax service

For more information, see "Voice Mail System Configuration (VMSC)" in Messaging Application Server Administration Guide (pdf).

  1. Administer the message storage server (MSS) system-level parameters.

Check and, if necessary, modify the following system parameters:

  • Start and end of system prime time
  • Default community for external subscribers
  • Password used for Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) communication between systems
  • Tracing
  • Intervals that the system waits before resending messages that it could not deliver because of a full mailbox

For more information, see Defining MSS system administration parameters.

  1. Administer classes of service on the MSS, including those for Enhanced List Applications (ELAs).

For more information, see:

Note: For more advanced class-of-service management, use the Mailbox Manager application.

  1. Administer caller applications on the MAS to enhance and extend the telephone user interface (TUI).

For more information, see "Caller Applications Editor" in Messaging Application Server Administration Guide (pdf).

  1. Administer the automated attendant capability on the MAS. The automated attendant greets callers and instructs them about how to proceed.

For more information, see "Auto Attendant Dialog Box" in in Messaging Application Server Administration Guide (pdf).

  1. Administer time zones on the MSS.

Use the Manage Classes-of-Service page to set the appropriate default time zone for subscriber classes-of -service.

For more information, see Editing a class-of-service.

  1. Administer time zones for subscribers in different time zones.

For more information, see:

  1. Add subscribers. Use the appropriate method, such as Provision or Mailbox Manager.

For more information about Provision and Mailbox Manager, see Concepts and Planning Guide (pdf).

  1. Administer an ELA and the following capabilities:
    • ELA shadow mailbox, and Broadcast mailbox (MSS)
    • Community IDs and community sending restrictions

Then create and test a list.

For more information about delivering messages to a larger number of recipients, see:

Additional initial administration tasks

The following table lists additional tasks that might be necessary, depending on the Modular Messaging system configuration.

Task Comments
  1. Administer networking:
    • Identify and add networked computers.
    • Set up remote updates for the local and remote systems. Use remote updates to administer remote users automatically.

For more information, see:

  1. Install the Mailbox Manager application.

Mailbox Manager is a Windows application for adding and modifying subscriber and class-of-service data. Using the Mailbox Manager, administrators can change or add records to an offline database and send the records to the MSS.

For more information, see Concepts and Planning Guide (pdf) and the Mailbox Manager User Guide.

  1. Administer the MSS system-level parameters to enable TCP/IP ports for Modular Messaging clients.

Use the System Administration page to enable the appropriate TCP/IP ports: LDAP, IMAP4, POP3, SMTP, and IMAPI.

For more information, see Defining MSS system administration parameters.

  1. Install the appropriate client applications for subscribers.

For more information, see the following resources:

  • For Web Client, see Web Client Server Installation and Upgrades, which is included on the Web Client software CD-ROM.
  • For Web Subscriber Options, see Web Subscriber Options Server Installation (pdf).
  • For Microsoft Outlook Client, see Microsoft Outlook Client User Guide (pdf).
  • For IBM Lotus Notes Client, see Modular Messaging Client Add-in for IBM Lotus Notes User Guide, which is included on the IBM Lotus Notes Client software CD-ROM.
  1. Back up system data on a regular basis.
To back up system data to a remote storage location on the customer local area network (LAN), you must:
  • Configure a remote storage location. The customer is responsible for setting up the remote storage location.
  • Administer the remote storage location on the MSS.

By default, Modular Messaging systems are set up to make an unattended nightly backup to a DVD-RAM on the MSS.

For a Modular Messaging system with an Avaya MSS, you can back up data and messages to a storage location on the customer LAN. You can then restore data and messages from that location.

Backing up data to a LAN storage location makes it possible to back up more data than to a DVD-RAM. Avaya recommends backing up data to the customer LAN for large systems or systems that receive and store a large volume of messages.

For more information, see Administering remote storage for MSS backups.

  1. Change the system administrator (sa) and voice mail administrator (vm) passwords on the MSS.

Also, if desired, set up additional administration accounts and administrative roles on the MSS.

For more information about MSS logins and passwords, see Setting up administration accounts on the MSS.
