Reinstalling the drive cage

The drive cage assembly is used in all three machine configurations.

To reinstall the drive cage:

1. Position the drive cage assembly in front of the chassis so that the slot on the bottom of the drive cage aligns with the guide rail inside the chassis.

Tip: For the MSS high-availability configuration (MSS-H), it might be easier to reattach the jumper and ribbon cables before you insert the drive cage into the chassis (pull the signal cables in Step 3 through the empty drive bay). If you do this, be sure to push the cables out of the way when you reinsert the drive cage.

2. Gently slide the drive cage assembly into the unit.
   1. Lift up the assembly so that the angled foot on the left side of the drive cage slides into the slotted tab on the chassis.
   2. The drive cage is properly seated when it is flush with the front of the chassis.
3. Reconnect the signal and power cables to all drives in the cage.

Note: The DVD drive always uses the terminating connectors on a cable that connects to more than one drive.

  1. Plug in the 80-pin IDE ribbon cable to the DVD and upper drive (hdc).
  2. Plug in the 80-pin IDE ribbon cable to the lower drive (hda).
  3. Plug in the power connectors to the DVD, upper drive, and lower drive.

  1. Plug in the J6 (3-pin) and J7 (10-pin) jumper cables to the SCSI RAID backplane.
  2. Plug in the 80-pin IDE ribbon cable to the DVD.
  3. Plug in the SCSI ribbon cable to the SCSI RAID backplane.
  4. Plug in the power connector for the DVD, and the two power connectors for the SCSI RAID backplane.

  1. Plug in the 80-pin IDE ribbon cable to the DVD player and the lower drive (hda).
  2. Plug in the power connectors to the DVD and lower drive.

  Note: There is an extra 4-pin power connector on the harness for an optional hard disk. You can plug either connector into the IDE drive. The DVD drive always uses the terminating connector.

4. Verify that all cables are neatly dressed, either in the power harness or under the tie-down strap for the IDE ribbon cables as appropriate.
5. Reattach the drive cage retaining screws. See figure Removing or replacing the drive cage.
1. Reattach the 4 screws to the front of the drive cage.
2. Reattach the 2 flathead screws to the holes in the side of the chassis, about 6 inches from the front of the cage.
3. For rack-mount units, if you loosened or removed some of the screws that attach the rail handle to the unit, replace or tighten the screws.
6. Replace the top cover and front bezel.
7. Restore power to the system.
8. Complete the procedure for restoring the drive:
   • If you replaced a DVD drive, see Verify new drive operation.
   • MSS-S: If you replaced an IDE RAID drive, see Retrieving hard disk drive information.
   • MAS: If you replaced an IDE drive, see Replacing the IDE drive.
