You might need to replace the entire machine in either of the following
cases:
Contact a technical support representative for instructions on
obtaining a replacement machine.
Note: If a replacement machine is required, Avaya
Inc. will attempt to replace it with a new unit that uses
the same type of motherboard. This will keep the cable connections
and number of MAS port boards possible the same between the
old and replacement units.

Replacing a partly functional machine
If one of the following components fails, the entire machine must
be replaced:
- Motherboard or processor
- MSS-H only: SCSI drive backplane
- Any other internal component that cannot be individually isolated
and replaced
When you receive the replacement machine, complete the following
steps to return the system to service:
- Disassemble the old machine.
- Reassemble the replacement machine.
Disassemble the old machine
To transfer usable components from the old machine to the replacement
unit:
- Unpack the replacement machine. Verify that it appears to be
in usable condition, with no obvious shipping damage.
Note: You will reuse the circuit boards, disk drives,
peripheral devices, and external cables from the old machine.
|
- If the system is in service, shut down
the system and remove power.
- Disconnect the cables to all peripheral devices including the
monitor, keyboard and mouse, and any external modems.
- Disconnect all additional cables from the rear of the unit including
AC power cords, LAN cables, RMB cables (on an MSS), and any port
board cables (on an MAS).
Note: Label the cables so that you can easily reconnect
them. See Chapter 2 of the Installation
guide (pdf) for cabling diagrams if needed.
|
- Remove the front bezel and top cover.
- Remove the circuit card hold-down bracket.
- Transfer all circuit cards from the old machine to the new machine.
For complete steps, see Circuit card replacement
(MSS) and Circuit card replacement (MAS).
- MSS-S: Transfer the RMB card.
- MSS-H: Transfer the RMB and SCSI RAID controller cards.
- MAS: Transfer any port board cards and the
CT cable, if present.
Note: All servers that use a nonintegrated video
and LAN-type motherboard also have a separate video card
and NIC. These two additional boards should be present
in the replacement unit.
Avaya Inc. will attempt to provide a replacement machine
that uses the same type of motherboard as the old unit.
This will keep the cable connections and number of supported
MAS port boards the same between the old and replacement
units.
|
- Transfer the disk drives from the old machine to the new machine.
For complete steps, see:
Reassemble the replacement machine
To bring the new machine into service:
- When all appropriate internal components are transferred to
the new machine, replace the
circuit card hold-down bracket.
- Replace the top cover and front bezel.
- Reconnect all external cables to the new machine as described
in Chapter 2 of the Installation
guide (pdf).
- Restore power to the system.
- Verify that the new system is working correctly using the tests
described in Chapter 5 of the Installation
guide (pdf).
Replacing the entire machine
If the entire machine has been damaged, you must install a completely
new machine.
When you receive the replacement machine, complete the following
steps to bring the new system into service:
- Install the new machine. See Chapter 2 of the Installation
guide (pdf).
- Restore crucial system data from backups.
- Verify that the new machine is working correctly using the tests
described in Chapter 5 of the Installation
guide (pdf).
