This topic describes the server types and key components supported
for Message Networking.
Identifying the server
There are two server types supported for Message Networking:
- S3210R: Provided in a rack-mount configuration that can be used in a desktop configuration
- S3400-H: Provided in a rack-mount configuration that can be used in a desktop configuration
- S3210: Provided in a tower configuration
S3400-H servers can look slightly different, depending on what
components are installed. Variations in S3400-H servers include:
- Motherboard and connector arrangement. An S3400-H
might have one of two different motherboards. The type of motherboard
that is installed affects the connector lineup on the back of
the unit, and affects the number and position of the circuit cards
that are installed. The two different motherboard styles are:
- Integrated video and LAN: In this style, the cable connectors appear
in a row along the bottom of the server back panel. There
is no separate video card; the connector for the video appears
as part of the regular connector lineup.
- Nonintegrated video and LAN: In this style, the cable connectors
appear in various places on the server back panel. There is
a separate video card.
- Power supply. The S3400-H uses two different
types of redundant power supply. An S3400-H with an integrated video and LAN always uses a side-by-side model. An S3400-H with a nonintegrated video and LAN usually uses vertically stacked power supplies, although
it might use the side-by-side model.
See S3400-H back views for figures that
compare the rear views of the two different motherboard arrangements.
Identifying the components
It is important that you identify the specific type of server you
are installing, because cabling and installation instructions vary
between different models.
