Powering up the system

This topic provides the steps required to power up the Message Networking system. This task assumes that you have already assembled and correctly connected all required hardware components.

To power up the Message Networking system:

  1. Verify that the power cables for the servers and all peripheral devices are connected to the UPS or to an appropriate AC power outlet. See S3210R and S3210 back views or S3400-H back views for reference. Connections include:
    • UPS: connected to an appropriate AC power outlet.
    • Server: connected to the UPS.
    • External modem: if present, connected to the UPS or to an appropriate AC power outlet.
  2. Press the On button located on the front of the UPS.

The appropriate lamps should light (see your UPS documentation). Always power up the UPS first.

  3. Press the power button on the monitor.

The power lamp on the monitor should light.

  4. For an external modem is present, press the On button (if present) and verify that the appropriate lamps light (see the modem documentation for details).
  5. For the S3400-H and S3210R, toggle the power switch at the rear of the unit to on (| is on, 0 is off).

If needed, see Identifying the server type and components to locate the power switch and power button. The S3400-H server might have one or two power switches, depending on the type of redundant power supply. Depending on the model, the S3400-H power supply LEDs might be orange until you press the power button on the front of the unit (normally the LEDs should be green).

  6. Press the power button on the front of the unit.

The LEDs on the front of the unit flash once. Then the LEDs light to indicate system power and drive activity.

  7. Wait up to 1 minute for the display to appear on the monitor.
  8. If you are installing a new system, continue with Logging into the system from the console.
