Initial administration checklist

The tasks in this checklist must be completed by the system administrator after the Message Storage Server (MSS) has been successfully installed.

System default values exist for tasks 1 through 4 in the checklist. If the default values meet the needs of your business, you can begin to add subscribers and run the system immediately.

Task Purpose Comments
  1. Change MSS passwords.
Changing both the system administrator (sa) and voice mail administrator (vm) passwords ensures system security and prevents unauthorized access to your MSS. See Password administration for instructions about how to change passwords.
  1. Define system limits.
This defines maximum capacities for such things as stored messages and message delivery lists. See Defining system limits for instructions about how to define system limits.
  1. Define basic features and parameters.
This defines login parameters and system time limits and transfer type, and globally activate certain features for all subscribers, such as multiple personal greetings. See Defining basic features and parameters for instructions about how to define basic features and parameters.
  1. Define class-of-service options.
This defines classes-of-service which you may then assign to subscribers. A class-of-service is a set of capabilities. For more information, see:

For more advanced class-of-service management, use the Mailbox Manager application. See the Mailbox Manager documentation that accompanies the application for more information.

  1. Add subscribers.
This defines subscriber mailboxes to the system. For more information, see:

For more advanced subscriber management, use the Mailbox Manager application. See the Mailbox Manager documentation that accompanies the application for more information.

  1. Identify and add remote machines.
This adds remote machine information to the local system.

For more information, see Adding remote machines.

  1. Set up remote updates for your local system.
This allows for automatic administration of remote users. Remote updates:
  • Let you automatically add all remote users who need to exchange messages across the network
  • Let your local system exchange user information with each remote system that is administered on the local system

For more information, see:

  1. Set up automatic deletion of nonadministered remote users.
This sets up automatic deletion of nonadministered remote users.

For more information, see Setting automatic deletion of nonadministered remote users

  1. Set up community sending restrictions (optional).
This restricts groups of subscribers to whom you have assigned the same community number from sending mail to other groups or from receiving voice mail from other groups. See Setting up community sending restrictions for instructions about how to set up sending restrictions.
