Memory module replacement

One or two Dual Inline Memory Module (DIMM) cards make up the memory module on an S3400-family server. The number of memory module cards present varies, depending on the type of motherboard that is installed:

  • Nonintegrated video and LAN model: One 512K DIMM card is present in socket DIMM0.
  • Integrated video and LAN model: Two 256K DIMM cards are present in sockets DIMM1A and DIMM2A.

The DIMM cards that make up the memory module can be replaced on site. The system must be powered down to reseat or replace a memory module.

Caution!
The memory module can be damaged by electrostatic discharge. See Protecting against ESD damage for more information.

Replacing the memory module

To replace a memory module (DIMM card) on the motherboard:

  1. Verify that the replacement equipment is on site and appears to be in usable condition, with no obvious shipping damage.
  2. Reseat the currently installed memory module.
  3. Replace the memory module if needed.

Reseat the currently installed memory module

To reseat the memory module and determine if it is faulty:

  1. Shut down the system and unplug the AC power cords.
  2. Remove the front bezel and top cover.
  3. Remove the circuit card hold-down bracket.
  4. Locate the memory module on the motherboard. One or two DIMM cards might be present:
    • Nonintegrated video and LAN model: One 512K DIMM card is present in socket DIMM0.
    • Integrated video and LAN model: Two 256K DIMM cards are present in sockets DIMM1A and DIMM2A.

    See the following figures to locate the memory module for your model of server:

  5. Apply pressure to each memory module to verify that it is properly seated.
  6. Press the holding clips toward the memory module to verify that they are secure.

    Caution!
    Do not force a memory module into or out of the socket. This can damage the socket, the memory module, or both.

  7. Proceed as follows:
    1. If a memory module was properly seated, replace it. See Replace the memory module.
    2. If a memory module was not properly installed or seated, continue with this procedure to test it.
  8. Restore power to the system.
  9. Watch the memory test at the beginning of the boot.
    1. If the memory test completes, note the amount of memory reported.
    2. Press F2 to enter Setup mode and stop the boot.

      Caution!
      If you miss entering Setup mode in time to stop the boot, allow the system to become fully operational, and then shut down the system before continuing. Failure to do so can damage data.

  10. Shut down the system and unplug the AC power cords.
  11. Proceed as follows:
    1. If the system shows an amount of memory less than 512 MB or if it did not boot, the memory module is not operating correctly. See Replace the memory module.
    2. If the system shows 512 MB of memory, the memory module is operating correctly. Continue with this procedure.
  12. Replace the circuit card hold-down bracket.
  13. Replace the top cover and front bezel.
  14. Restore power to the system.
  15. Place a test call to the system to verify operation after the system finishes booting.
    If the system is operating properly, you do not need to replace the memory module.

Replace the memory module

To install a new memory module:

  1. Press the holding clips on both sides of the socket outward to release a currently installed memory module. See figure Removing the memory module.
  2. Gently pull the faulty memory module out of the socket.
  3. Caution!
    The memory module can be damaged by electrostatic discharge. See Protecting against ESD damage for more information.

  4. Holding the DIMM card by the edges, remove it from its antistatic package.
  5. Position the replacement memory module in the correct orientation over the appropriate socket:
    • Nonintegrated video and LAN model: Use socket DIMM0.
    • Integrated video and LAN model: Use sockets DIMM1A and DIMM2A.

    Note: If your model of server uses two DIMM cards for the memory module, you might need to replace both cards.

    See the following figures to locate the correct sockets to use for your model of server:

  6. Gently push the replacement memory module into the appropriate socket. See figure Installing the memory module.
  7. When the DIMM card is seated firmly, the holding clips spring shut to lock it into position. Verify that the clips are firmly in place.
  8. Caution!
    Do not force a memory module into or out of the socket. This can damage the socket, the memory module, or both.

  9. Replace the circuit card hold-down bracket.
  10. Replace the top cover and front bezel.
  11. Restore power to the system.
  12. Watch the memory test at the beginning of the boot.
    1. The system should report 512 MB for a working memory module. Continue with this procedure.
    2. If the memory test fails or does not report 512 MB, the memory module is faulty, is not installed correctly, or the slot might be damaged. Return to Reseat the currently installed memory module to try to diagnose the problem.
  13. Place a test call to the system to verify operation after the system finishes booting.
