G3i V2/3/4 to R9si (On-Site)

Introduction

This section provides the information necessary to upgrade a DEFINITY ® G3i V2, V3, or V4 system with a single-carrier or a multicarrier PPN to a DEFINITY R9si system using the on-site upgrade method.

References

The DEFINITY ECS system description lists release features and functions. The DEFINITY ECS administrator's guide provides the commands and procedures required to initialize and administer the ECS. These documents are included in the DEFINITY Enterprise Communications Server Documentation Library published in CD-ROM.

For hardware details, see DEFINITY Hardware and When to use the TN2401 versus the TN2401/TN2400 sandwich pack.

About circuit-pack carriers

If the system currently being upgraded was originally a System 75, the circuit-pack carrier or cabinet is no longer supported. This table identifies the obsolete carriers and cabinet.

J58890AB
(originally System 75 small-cabinet carriers)

Note: In some previous upgrades, the control cabinet or carrier replacement was optional. The replacement is required for this upgrade. Use the upgrade instructions in this section, but refer to the System 75 Small-Cabinet to R8si (Blowback) upgrade for instructions on replacing the carrier, and the System 75 XE to R8si (Blowback) upgrade for instructions on replacing the cabinet.

Before you begin the upgrade

Review the Preparation and process steps carefully. These tables describe the tasks that must be completed before the upgrade visit and who is responsible for them.

To prevent the most common upgrade problems, be sure that you have

Task List: G3i V2, V3, or V4 to R9si

Use this task list when you are upgrading a DEFINITY G3i V2, V3, or V4 PPN to an R9si PPN.

Ensure that these tasks are complete before the upgrade visit:

  1. Verify the required hardware [G3i V2/3/4 to R9si]

  2. Provide the required tools [G3i V2/3/4 to R9si]

Perform these tasks during the upgrade visit:

  1. Check existing software load [G3i V2/3/4 to R9si] to identify any software patches.

  2. Verify system status [G3i V2/3/4 to R9si] Record any customer-placed busy-outs.

  3. Disable scheduled maintenance and alarm origination [G3i V2/3/4 to R9si]

  4. Record all links and remove only ISDN interface links [G3i V2/3/4 to R9si]

  5. Disable TTI [G3i V2/3/4 to R9si] if it is enabled. Do not skip this step!

  6. Translations can be corrupted if TTI is enabled. Confirm that TTI is completely disabled before you continue!

  7. Save translation [G3i V2/3/4 to R9si] or Save translation, duplicated system[G3i V2/3/4 to R9si]

  8. If necessary, Save announcements [G3i V2/3/4 to R9si]

  9. For systems so equipped: Shut down DEFINITY LAN Gateway [G3i V2/3/4 to R9si]

  10. For systems so equipped: Shut down DEFINITY AUDIX system [G3i V2/3/4 to R9si]

  11. Power down PPN [G3i V2/3/4 to R9si] and unseat any adjuncts

Note: If a cabinet or carrier upgrade is required, do it now!

Note: Any BX.25 adjunct links to adjuncts (for example, CMS, AUDIX, INTUITY, or others) that are to be retained will still reside on the existing TN765 processor interface (P/I) in the designated P/I slot.

  1. Remove translation card and CPP1, TN777B, and TN786B circuit packs [G3i V2/3/4 to R9si]

  2. Install TN2404 and TN2401 circuit packs and original translation card [G3i V2/3/4 to R9si]

  3. Verify TDM cables and terminators [G3i V2/3/4 to R9si]. If new TDM terminators and cables are required, install them now.

  4. Power up [G3i V2/3/4 to R9si]

  5. Verify upgrade [G3i V2/3/4 to R9si]

  6. Set date, time, and daylight savings rule [G3i V2/3/4 to R9si]

  7. Enable customer options and alarm origination [G3i V2/3/4 to R9si] (You identify the upgrade as R9 here.)

  8. Verify the upgrade [G3i V2/3/4 to R9si]

  9. Restore any customer-placed busy-outs before you run the acceptance tests!

If the system contains adjuncts such as DEFINITY AUDIX, reseat them as required before you run the acceptance tests.

  10. Run acceptance tests [G3i V2/3/4 to R9si]

  11. Readminister TTI [G3i V2/3/4 to R9si]

  12. Enable Scheduled Maintenance and Alarm Notification

  13. Restore announcements [G3i V2/3/4 to R9si] or Rerecord announcements [G3i V2/3/4 to R9si] as necessary.

  14. Replace the pre-R5 translation card with the new R9 translation card and Save announcements and translation [G3i V2/3/4 to R9si] (For duplicated systems, first verify that both SPEs are functional and can be interchanged. For instructions on how to verify, refer to Save translation, duplicated system[G3i V2/3/4 to R9si].)

  15. Register the upgraded switch [G3i V2/3/4 to R9si]

  16. Return equipment to MSL [G3i V2/3/4 to R9si]
