Restoring backed-up system files

This topic provides information about restoring backed-up Avaya™ S3400 Message Server files and is organized as follows:

About restoring backed-up system files

The data stored on DVD-RAM media during the unattended or attended backup is used to restore the system to an operational state. The backup media contains both Message Storage Server (MSS) and Message Application Server (MAS) data.

If a system problem or failure occurs, backups can be invaluable in returning the system to an operational state. You are likely to restore backups when directed to do so by an alarm repair action.

Note: Only perform a restore if a system problem or failure occurs. If you are not sure if it is necessary to perform a restore, contact your remote support center.

Depending on the severity of the situation, system software might have to be reinstalled on the MSS before you can restore data from the backup media. See Adding software packages for these procedures.

Performing a restore

Depending on the amount of data on the system, it usually takes between 15 and 60 minutes to restore data to the MSS from one DVD-RAM medium.

To restore system data:

  1. Stop the messaging software.
  2. Locate the backup medium or media that contains the data to be restored.
  3. Insert the backup medium in to the DVD-RAM drive.

Note: If you are restoring data from multiple DVD-RAM media, make sure you insert the medium labeled "DVD #1" first.

  4. From the Messaging Administration main menu, select:
  5. Utilities
         Backup and Restore
              Restore

The system displays the Restore page.

Note: The system might notify you that you need to reinstall system software before continuing with data restoration. If so, note which software packages you must reinstall and see Adding software packages for these procedures.

  6. For each data type that you want to restore, select Yes from the drop-down list for that data type. Yes is the default setting for all data types.
  7. For each data type that you do not want to restore, select No from the drop-down list for that data type.
  8. Click Save to restore the selected data types.

Note: If you are not performing the restore from the console, the system displays a warning message that states that leaving the Restore page will abort the restore. Click OK to acknowledge the warning message.

The system displays the SSH User Authentication dialog box.

  9. Enter your login, for example, sa, in the User name field and your password in the Password field.

  10. Click Login.

Note: If you are performing the restore from the console, the system displays a warning message that states that leaving the Restore page will abort the restore. Click OK to acknowledge the warning message.

  11. The system displays restore information as it prepares for the restore and then displays the following message:

    ****************************************************************************

Please insert DVD or CD-ROM number 1

    ****************************************************************************

Press Enter to continue or ^C (Control C) to quit:

  12. Press Enter.

The system begins to restore data from the backup medium.

  13. When the restore is complete, the system displays the following message:

Restore completed successfully - Day, Date, and Time

  14. If the restore completed successfully, continue with Step 12. If the process was not successful, the log contains an explanation of why the restore process failed. See Verifying the restore. If the restore process was unsuccessful, do the following:
    1. Return to Step 2 and attempt the restore again.
    2. If the process fails a second time, access the Alarm log and determine if there are any active alarms in the log. See Alarms and follow the associated repair actions for any active alarms.
  15. If you do not have any remote networked machines, continue with Step 13. If you have remote networked machines, do the following:
    1. Click Return to Main.
    2. Run a manual update to and from all remote networked machines to correct any database inconsistencies. See Performing remote subscriber updates manually.
    3. Continue with Step 13.

  16. Click Return to Main to return to the Messaging Administration main menu.

  17. Reboot the system.
  18. Restore MAS data, if necessary. See Restoring backed-up MAS data.

Verifying the restore

To verify the restore:

  1. Start at the Messaging Administration main menu and select:
  2. Logs
         Backup and Restore Logs
              View Restore Log

The system displays the View Restore Logs page, which contains a drop-down list with the available restore logs.

  3. Select the restore log that you want to view and click View.
  4. The system displays the View Restore Logs page, which contains a list of all the files that were restored and information about any errors that occurred during the restore.

  5. Scroll to the end of the restore log and verify that there is an entry with the following text:
  6. Restore completed successfully - Day, Date, and Time

If the restore was not successful, the log contains an explanation of why the restore process failed.

  7. Click Return to Main to return to the Messaging Administration main menu.
