Standard power supply replacement

The MSS standard configuration (MSS-S) and the Messaging Application Server (MAS) each have a single power supply. If the power supply fails, the unit cannot provide service until the component is replaced.

Caution!
Never remove the cover on the power supply. If the power supply is faulty, replace the entire component.

Replacing an MAS or MSS-S power supply

To replace a standard power supply:

  1. Verify that the replacement equipment is on site and appears to be in usable condition, with no obvious shipping damage.
  2. Remove the old power supply.
  3. Install a new power supply.

Remove the old power supply

To remove a faulty power supply:

  1. Shut down the system and unplug the AC power cords.
  2. Remove the front bezel and top cover.
  3. Remove the circuit card hold-down bracket.
  4. On the power supply, remove the 4 outer screws that attach the power supply to the chassis. See Removing or replacing a standard power supply.
  5. Unplug and undress all power supply cables. See Power supply cable connections.
  6. Note: Press down on a dress clip's tab to open it.

    1. Undress and unplug the 4-pin ATX 12 V power connector to the motherboard.
    2. Undress the bundle of unused power connectors on the upper side of the chassis.
    3. Undress the bundle of cables that pass through the two middle dress clips, then unplug the power connector from the motherboard.
    4. Undress the lower bundle of cables, then remove it from all drives and fans as follows:
      • Unplug the 4-pin power connector to the DVD drive.
      • Unplug the 4-pin power connector to the hard disk drives (drive hda and drive hdc if present).
      • Unplug the 4-pin power connector to the fan assembly (not to the individual chassis fans).
  7. Lift out the faulty power supply and its attached sled and cable harness.
  8. Remove the 5 screws that attach the power supply to the sled. See Removing or attaching the power supply sled.
  9. Set the faulty power supply aside.

Install a new power supply

To install a new power supply:

  1. Attach the replacement power supply to the sled with the 5 screws. See Removing or attaching the power supply sled.
  2. Position the new power supply and sled inside the chassis.
  3. Secure the new power supply to the chassis by replacing the 4 outer screws. See Removing or replacing a standard power supply.
  4. Separate the cable harness into four groups of cables. Dress and connect the cables as follows. See Power supply cable connections.
    1. Dress and plug the 4-pin ATX 12 V power connector into the motherboard.
    2. Dress the lower bundle of power cables for the drives and fans, then connect them as follows:
      • Plug a 4-pin power connector into the connector leading to the fan assembly.
      • Plug a 4-pin power connector into the hard disk drives (drive hda and drive hdc if present).
      • Plug a 4-pin power connector into the DVD drive.
    3. Dress the thick bundle of cables through the two middle dress clips, then plug the power connector into the motherboard.
    4. Dress any unused power connectors on the upper side of the chassis.
    5. Note: Press each dress clip shut to lock it.

  5. Replace the circuit card hold-down bracket.
  6. Replace the top cover and front bezel.
  7. Restore power to the system.
  8. If the system powers up, the power supply is working.

  9. Check for alarms to verify that the drives, fans, and circuit packs are all working.
  10.
