Disk drive cable replacement

You can replace the ribbon cables to the hard-disk drives and removable-media drives if needed.

The following cables can be replaced on site:

Replacing the IDE drive and DVD cable

The Messaging Application Server (MAS) has a single IDE drive and a DVD player. The ribbon cable for these drives can be replaced.

To replace the IDE/DVD drive ribbon cable:

  1. Verify that the replacement equipment is on site and appears to be in usable condition, with no obvious shipping damage.
  2. Verify that the replacement cable has three IDE connectors (one for the motherboard, one for the IDE drive, and one for the DVD).
  3. Shut down the system and unplug the AC power cords.
  4. Remove the front bezel and top cover.
  5. Remove the circuit card hold-down bracket.
  6. Remove the old IDE/DVD drive cable as follows. See Replacing an IDE ribbon cable.
    1. Disconnect the IDE ribbon cable from the DVD and the IDE drive.
    2. Release the tie-down strap that holds the ribbon cable to the chassis.
    3. Disconnect the other end of the ribbon cable from the primary (PRI IDE) connector on the mother board.
    4. Remove the cable. Set it aside.
  7. Install the new cable by reversing the removal steps (see step 6).
  8. Caution!
Fold the new cable carefully so it fits neatly into the chassis, but is not stressed.

  9. Replace the circuit card hold-down bracket.
  10. Replace the top cover and front bezel.
  11. Restore power to the system.
  12. If the system boots correctly, the new cable should be working.

Replacing IDE RAID drive or DVD cables

The Message Storage Server standard configuration (MSS-S) has two IDE drives for data redundancy. The IDE ribbon cables to either drive, and to the machine's DVD drive, can be replaced.

To replace the ribbon cable for an IDE RAID drive or the DVD drive:

  1. Verify that the replacement equipment is on site and appears to be in usable condition, with no obvious shipping damage.
  2. Verify that the replacement cable has the correct number of IDE connectors:
    • two for the hda cable (one for the motherboard, and one for the lower IDE drive).
    • three for the hdc cable (one for the motherboard, one for the upper IDE drive, and one for the DVD).
  3. Shut down the system and unplug the AC power cords.
  4. Remove the front bezel and top cover.
  5. Remove the circuit card hold-down bracket.
  6. Remove the old IDE cable as follows. See Replacing the IDE RAID ribbon cables.
    • For hdc (the upper drive) and DVD:
      1. Disconnect the IDE ribbon cable from the DVD and upper drive.
      2. Release the tie-down strap that holds the ribbon cables to the chassis.
      3. Disconnect the other end of the ribbon cable from the secondary (SEC IDE) connector on the mother board.
      4. Remove the cable. Set it aside.
    • For hda (the lower drive):
      1. Disconnect the IDE ribbon cable from the lower drive.
      2. Release the tie-down strap that holds the ribbon cables to the chassis.
      3. Disconnect the other end of the ribbon cable from the primary (PRI IDE) connector on the mother board.
      4. Remove the cable. Set it aside.

Note: The ribbon cable for hda lies underneath the cable for hdc. You may need to partly remove the upper cable in order to replace the cable beneath it.

Replacing SCSI RAID controller or DVD cables

The Message Storage Server high-availability configuration (MSS-H) contains two ribbon cables that are field replaceable:

Replacing the SCSI RAID controller cable

To replace the SCSI cable to the RAID controller card:

  1. Verify that the replacement equipment is on site and appears to be in usable condition, with no obvious shipping damage.
  2. Shut down the system and unplug the AC power cords.
  3. Remove the front bezel and top cover.
  4. Remove the circuit card hold-down bracket.
  5. Remove the old SCSI cable as follows. See Replacing the SCSI RAID controller cable.
    1. Disconnect the SCSI ribbon cable from the IDE connector on top of the RAID controller card.
    2. Disconnect the other end of the ribbon cable from the SCSI connector on the RAID disk-drive backplane.
    3. Note: You may have to unplug the IDE cable to the DVD in order to access the SCSI connector.

    4. Remove the cable. Set it aside.
  6. Install the new cable by reversing the removal steps (see step 5).
  7. Replace the circuit card hold-down bracket.
  8. Replace the top cover and front bezel.
  9. Restore power to the system.
  10. If the system boots correctly, the new cable should be working.

Replacing the DVD cable

To replace the IDE ribbon cable to the DVD drive:

  1. Verify that the replacement equipment is on site and appears to be in usable condition, with no obvious shipping damage.
  2. Shut down the system and unplug the AC power cords.
  3. Remove the front bezel and top cover.
  4. Remove the circuit card hold-down bracket.
  5. Remove the old DVD cable as follows. See Replacing the DVD cable (MSS-H).
    1. Disconnect the IDE cable from the DVD drive.
    2. Release the tie-down strap that holds the cable to the chassis.
    3. Disconnect the other end of the ribbon cable from the secondary (SEC IDE) connector on the mother board.
    4. Remove the cable. Set it aside.
  6. Install the new cable by reversing the removal steps (see step 5).
  7. Replace the circuit card hold-down bracket.
  8. Replace the top cover and front bezel.
  9. Restore power to the system.
  10. Verify new drive operation.
