Server replacement

You might need to replace the entire Avaya server if:

Contact a technical support representative for instructions on obtaining a replacement server.

Note: If a replacement server is required, Avaya will attempt to replace it with a new server that uses the same type of motherboard. This practice keeps the cable connections and number of MAS port boards consistent between the old and replacement servers.

Replacing a partly functional S3400-family server

If one of the following components fails, you must replace the entire server:

  • Damage to the chassis
  • Motherboard, including components on the board such as:
    • the processor
    • any connectors on the back of the server, such as the Ethernet interfaces for the LAN
  • Power harness
  • Any other internal component that cannot be individually isolated and replaced on-site, such as any interior cables that are not field-replaceable units

A replacement chassis is sometimes called a bare bones chassis. Because you move the disk drives that contain all system data to the new server, the new server requires no additional programming to return to service.

When you receive the replacement server, complete the following tasks to return the system to full service:

  1. Transfer boards and disk drives from the old server.
  2. Install the replacement server and verify correct operation.

Transfer boards and disk drives from the old server

To transfer usable components from the old server to the replacement server:

  1. Unpack the replacement server. Verify that the server appears to be in usable condition, with no obvious shipping damage.
  2. Note: You reuse the circuit boards, disk drives, peripheral devices, and external cables from the old server.

  3. If the server is in service, shut down the server and remove AC power.
  4. Unplug all cables from the back of the server. Label the cables so you can easily reconnect them.
  5. For a rack-mount setup, remove the server from the cabinet.
    1. Prepare a clear area as a work surface for the server.
    2. Remove the server from the rails, and set the server on the work surface. For safety considerations, get another person to assist you with moving the server.
  6. Remove the front bezel and top cover.
  7. Remove the circuit card hold-down bracket.
  8. Transfer any port boards and the CT cable, if present for multiple port boards. For complete steps, see Circuit card replacement.
  9. Note: All servers that use a nonintegrated video and LAN-type motherboard also have a separate video card and NIC. These two additional boards already should be present in the replacement server.

  10. Transfer the disk drives from the old server to the new server. For complete steps, see Replacing the IDE drive.

Install the replacement server and verify correct operation

After you transfer all appropriate components to the replacement server, complete the following steps to return the system to full service:

  1. Replace the circuit card hold-down bracket.
  2. Replace the top cover and front bezel.
  3. Attach the appropriate mounting hardware for the new server. For more information, see Installation and Upgrades (pdf).
  4. Caution!
The Avaya Modular Messaging servers are heavy. Get another person to assist you with lifting the servers into place.

  5. For a rack-mount setup, return the server to the cabinet.
  6. Plug in all cables at the back of the server.
  7. Reconnect all external cables to the new server. For more information, see Installation and Upgrades (pdf).
  8. Restore power to the server.
  9. Verify that the new server is working correctly. For acceptance tests, see Installation and Upgrades (pdf).

Replacing the entire server

If the entire server was damaged, you must install a completely new server.

When you receive the replacement server, complete the following steps to bring the system into full service:

  1. Install the new server. For complete procedures, see Installation and Upgrades (pdf).
  2. Note: The replacement server already has the operating system loaded. However, you might need to install software updates, as directed in the installation guide.

  3. Configure the new server and restore data. For complete information, see Installation and Upgrades (pdf).
  4. Verify that the new server is working correctly. For acceptance tests, see Installation and Upgrades (pdf).
