Circuit card replacement

You can replace all circuit cards in an S3400-family Avaya MAS or supplementary tracing server. You must turn off the server before you can replace or add a circuit card.

Use this procedure to:

  • Add a port board to an MAS to support additional traffic
  • Reseat a circuit card to determine if a board is faulty or just loose
  • Replace a faulty circuit card in an MAS

Replacing or adding circuit cards

To replace or add a circuit card in an MAS:

  1. Prepare for server maintenance
  2. Remove the old circuit card.
  3. For Dialogic port boards only, cycle power on the server, then set jumpers and switches.
  4. Install the new circuit card.
  5. Verify new card operation.

Prepare for server maintenance

Before you can replace circuit cards in an MAS or supplementary tracing server:

  1. If the server is already in operation, you must take the server out of service. Schedule and publicize a time.
  2. Verify that the replacement equipment is on site and appears to be in usable condition, with no obvious shipping damage.
  3. Caution!
    If you are adding or replacing a Dialogic port board, verify that the new board is of the same type as any port boards already installed. You cannot mix board types within the same MAS, such as analog boards with DSE or QSIG.

  4. Verify that the replacement circuit card is of the same type as the card you are replacing.
  5. Note: New QSIG port boards have a single connector. The early E1-QSIG and T1-QSIG port boards have two connectors, with a plug in the unused connector on the faceplate. Both types of QSIG boards operate identically.

  6. For a system that has multiple MASs, you can busyout the ports on the switch, if possible, before you start the repair operation. The PBX administrator must use the procedures appropriate for this PBX to busyout the ports for MAS. Depending on the switch integration, the administrator might be able to temporarily reroute calls to other MASs. Otherwise, callers into the system might hear ring-no answer or a busy signal.

Caution!
If you are adding or replacing a Dialogic port board, before you shut down the server, write down the Dialogic board settings for each board in the MAS. You must verify these settings after you replace or install a new port board. Use the Dialogic Configuration Manager to view key settings. Remove the old circuit card

To remove a faulty circuit card:

  1. Shut down the server and unplug the AC power cord.
  2. Remove the front bezel and top cover.
  3. Remove the circuit card hold-down bracket.
  4. Locate the circuit card you want to reseat or replace. See figure Messaging Application Server (back view).
    • Up to 5 port boards might be present, depending on the type of motherboard and port boards used. These include:
      • Digital Set Emulation (DSE) switch integration card
      • Analog port board (4-port and 12-port versions) for tip/ring or fax capability
      • T1 or E1 boards for QSIG switch integrations

      Note: Not all MASs have port boards installed.

    • Nonintegrated video and LAN model only:
      • Video card (closest to the power supply)
      • Network interface card (NIC)

    Caution!
    Observe proper electrostatic discharge (ESD) precautions when you handle computer components. Wear an antistatic wrist strap that touches your bare skin and connect the strap cable to an earth ground. For more information, see Protecting against ESD damage.

  5. Before you replace the circuit card, verify that the board is seated securely in the slot connector and that any cables are securely connected.
    • If the circuit card connections were loose, reseating them might fix the problem. Restore power to the server and verify circuit card operation.
    • If the circuit card connections were secure, continue with this procedure.
  6. Remove any exterior cables connected to the circuit card you want to replace. These include:
    • Any port board line cables
    • Nonintegrated video and LAN model only:
      • Video card monitor cable
      • NIC LAN cable
  7. Note: Label the cables so you can easily reconnect them. For more information, see Installation and Upgrades (pdf).

  8. Remove any interior cables connected to the circuit card you want to replace, such as the Computer Telephony (CT) bus cable used for connecting multiple port boards. See figure Messaging Application Server (internal view).
  9. Unscrew the retaining screw that attaches the circuit card to the chassis. Set the screw aside.
  10. Note: To remove the video card, you must release the safety catch at the back of the board before you can lift it out.

  11. Lift the circuit card out.
  12. Note: Early E1-QSIG and T1-QSIG port boards have a plug in the unused connector on the faceplate. You must remove the plug to lift out or replace the port board. QSIG port boards that ship after mid-2005 have only a single connector. Both types of QSIG boards operate identically.

 

For Dialogic port boards, cycle power, then set jumpers and switches

Note: This section applies only to Dialogic port boards. If you replaced a NIC or video card, continue with Install the new circuit card.

For Dialogic port boards, you must first cycle power on the server to clear out the old settings.

Caution!
If you do not cycle power on the empty server, the system might not recognize the new board. If the system retains the old settings, you might have to remove all the port boards, reboot the empty server, then reinstall all port boards. You must then manually reconfigure all port boards to correct the problem.

To cycle server power, and then set jumpers and switches on the port board for board position, bus termination, and other features:

  1. Cycle power on the MAS to clear out the settings for the faulty board:
    1. Leave the cover off. Plug in the cables for the monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
    2. Plug in the AC power cord. Let the server boot completely.
    3. After the reboot is complete, shut down the server software. Click Start > Shut Down, and then click OK.
    4. After the server turns off, unplug all cables from the back of the server.
  2. Remove the new port board from its packaging.
  3. Set the jumpers and switches as required for this type of board:
  4. Note: Compare the settings on the old port board and the replacement port board. Ensure that the new port board uses the correct settings.

  5. Install the new port board as follows:
    • If you are replacing an existing card, install the replacement card in the same slot from which you removed the old port board.
    • If you are adding a new card, install the port board in the next available PCI slot. Add port boards in the PCI slots starting from the outer edge of the chassis towards the center of the MAS.

Install the new circuit card

To install a new circuit card:

  1. Slide the card edge connector into the slot connector and the card slot retainer bracket into the slot guide.
  2. Apply pressure to the top of the card only, until the edge connector is firmly seated. See figure Replacing or adding a circuit card.

    Note: To install a video card, hold open the safety catch until the card is seated, and then release it to lock the board in place.

  3. Replace and tighten the retaining screw to hold the circuit card in place.
  4. If the MAS has multiple port boards, connect the port boards using the Computer Telephony (CT) bus cable. The CT bus cable varies depending on the type of motherboard in the MAS. See figure Replacing or adding a circuit card.
    To attach the bus cable:
    1. Position the CT bus cable so the colored stripe on the ribbon cable faces towards the ports at the back of the chassis.
    2. Attach the end connector on the bus cable to the CT bus edge connector at the top of the board in the slot closest to the side of the chassis.
    3. Connect the next bus connector to the next port board, and so on.
    4. If the cable has extra connectors or loose ribbon cable, tuck the cable down so it does not snag when you replace the cover.
  5. Reattach any other interior cables if needed.
  6. Reattach any exterior cables. For more information, see Installation and Upgrades (pdf).
  7. Note: For a rack-mount setup, you might have to slide the server back into the cabinet to get enough slack to plug in the exterior cables.

  8. Replace the circuit card hold-down bracket.
  9. Replace the top cover and front bezel.
  10. Restore power to the server.

Verify new circuit card operation

To verify that the new circuit card is working:

  1. If you replaced one of the following cards, perform the appropriate verification checks:
    • Dialogic port boards:
      • After the server boots, configure the new board. For more information, see Installation and Upgrades (pdf).
      • Note: If you reseat or replace a Dialogic board, you might need to reconfigure all Dialogic boards in the server. Verify the settings for all the port boards using the Dialogic Configuration Manager after you install, reseat, or replace a Dialogic board.

      • If you added a port board to an MAS, connect the new port board to the PBX (switch) and administer it.
      • If the PBX administrator busied out the MAS ports on the switch, the administrator must now bring the MAS ports back into service.
      • Test the Dialogic port board using the Dialogic Line Test application. For more information, see Installation and Upgrades (pdf).
    • NIC LAN card: After restoring power to the server:
      • Ping the address of the new card through the network.
      • Verify that the new card is present and answering.
    • Video card: After the server boots:
      • Bring up a GUI application, such as the Web interface to this product.
      • Verify that the application displays correctly.
  2. Verify that any circuit pack alarms are resolved. For more information, see Displaying the MAS alarm logs.
