All circuit cards can be replaced on site. The system must be
powered down in order to replace or add a circuit card.
Replacing or adding circuit cards
To replace or add a circuit card:
- Verify that the replacement equipment is on site and appears
to be in usable condition, with no obvious shipping damage.
- Verify that the replacement circuit card is of the same type
as the card you are replacing.
Caution!
If you are adding or replacing a Dialogic port board,
make sure that the new card is of the same type as any
port boards already installed in the MAS. You cannot mix
board types (such as analog boards with DSE or T1/E1)
in the same MAS.

- Remove the old circuit card.
- Set jumpers and switches (MAS port
boards only).
- Install the new circuit card.
- Verify new card operation.
Remove the old circuit card
To remove a faulty circuit card:
- Shut down the system and unplug the AC
power cords.
- Remove the front bezel and top cover.
- Remove the circuit card hold-down bracket.
- Locate the circuit card you want to remove. As you face the
back of the machine, the circuit cards are:
- MSS-S or MSS-H: See MSS standard
configuration (back view) or MSS high-availability
configuration (back view).
- Video card (closest to the power supply)
- Network interface card (NIC)
- MSS-H only: SCSI RAID controller card
- Remote maintenance board (RMB)
- MAS: See Messaging Application
Server (back view).
- Video card (closest to the power supply)
- Network interface card (NIC)
- Up to 5 port boards, typically starting from the right-hand
side of the chassis. These include:
- Digital Set Emulation (DSE) switch integration card
- Analog port board (4- and 12-port versions support
tip/ring or fax capability)
- T1 or E1 boards (support high-line capacities for
QSIG switch integration)
- Remove any exterior cables connected to the circuit card you
want to replace. These include:
- Video card monitor cable
- NIC LAN cable
- MSS-S or MSS-H: RMB modem and COM cables
- MAS: Any port board line cables
Note: Label the cables so you can easily reconnect
them. See Chapter 2 of the Installation
guide (pdf) for cabling diagrams if needed.

- Remove any interior cables connected to the circuit card you
want to replace. These include:
- Unscrew the retaining screw that attaches the circuit card to
the chassis. Set it aside.
- Lift the circuit card out. See Replacing
or adding a circuit card.
Note: For the video card, you must release the
safety catch at the rear of the board before you can lift
it out.

Set jumpers and switches
For all circuit cards, if you are replacing an existing
card, verify any settings on the new card by comparing it with the
old card.
For Dialogic port boards in the MAS, you need to set jumpers
and switches on the port board circuit pack for board position,
bus termination, and other features as follows:
- Remove the new port board from its packaging.
- Set the jumpers and switches as required for this type of board:
- If you are replacing an existing card, install the replacement
card in the same slot from which you removed the old card.
If you are adding a new card, install the card in the next available
PCI slot. Boards are added from the rightmost slot (PCI slot 6)
toward the center of the MAS.
Install the new circuit card
To install a new circuit card:
- Slide the card's edge connector into the slot connector and
the card's slot retainer bracket into the slot guide. Apply pressure
to the top of the card only, until the edge connector is firmly
seated.
Note: For the video card, hold open the safety
catch until the card is seated, then release it to lock
the board in place.

- Replace and tighten the retaining screw to hold the circuit
card in place. See Replacing or adding a
circuit card.
- Reattach any interior cables.
- For the RMB, reconnect the ribbon cable to the 10-pin
connector near the top rear of the board.
- For a SCSI RAID controller card:
- Reconnect the ribbon cable to the upper edge connector
near the faceplate.
- Reconnect the SCSI LED cable to the 2 pins closest to
the faceplate on the 8-pin connector near the upper edge
of the board.
- For an MAS that has multiple port boards installed,
use the Computer Telephony (CT) bus cable to connect the port
boards. To attach the bus cable:
- Position the CT bus cable so that the colored stripe on
the ribbon cable faces toward the ports at the back of the
chassis.
- Attach the end connector on the bus cable to the CT bus
edge connector at the top of the card in the highest numbered
slot.
- Connect the next bus connector to the next port board, and
so on.
- When finished, if the cable has extra connectors or loose
ribbon cable, tuck the cable down so that it does not snag
when you replace the cover.
- Reattach any exterior cables. See Chapter 2 of the Installation
guide (pdf) for cabling diagrams if needed.
Note: For a rack-mount configuration, you
may not have enough slack to plug in the exterior cables
until you slide the machine back into the cabinet.

- Replace the circuit card hold-down
bracket.
- Replace the top cover and front bezel.
- Restore power to the system.
Verify new circuit card operation
To verify that the new circuit card is working:
- If you replaced one of the following cards, perform the verification
checks as noted:
- Video card: After the system boots:
- Bring up a GUI application, such as the web interface
to this product.
- Verify that the application displays correctly.
- NIC LAN cable: After restoring power to the system:
- Ping the address of the new card through the network.
- Verify that the new card is present and answering.
- MSS-S or MSS-H: RMB card:
- After the system boots, test RMB functionality (for
example, call in to the board, and run standard inquiries).

- MSS-H: SCSI RAID controller card:
- After the system boots, verify that the application
software loads correctly.
- MAS: Any Dialogic port boards:
- After the system boots, configure and test the new board
as described in Chapter 4 of the Installation
guide (pdf).
- Verify that the circuit pack alarms are resolved. See Alarms
for more information.
