Machine replacement

You may need to replace the entire machine in either of the following cases:

Contact a technical support representative for instructions on obtaining a replacement machine.

Replacing a partly functional machine

If one of the following components fails, the entire machine must be replaced:

  • Motherboard and processor
  • MSS-H only: SCSI drive backplane
  • Any other internal component that cannot be individually isolated and replaced

When you receive the replacement machine, complete the following steps to return the system to service:

  1. Disassemble the old machine.
  2. Reassemble the replacement machine.

Disassemble the old machine

To transfer usable components from the old machine to the replacement unit:

  1. Unpack the replacement machine. Verify that it appears to be in usable condition, with no obvious shipping damage.
  2. Note: You will be reusing the circuit boards, disk drives, peripheral devices, and external cables from the old machine.

  3. If the system is in service, shut down the system and remove power.
  4. Disconnect the cables to all peripheral devices including the monitor, keyboard/mouse, and any external modems.
  5. Disconnect all additional cables from the rear of the unit including AC power cords, LAN cables, RMB cables (on an MSS), and any port board cables (on an MAS).
  6. Note: Label the cables so you can easily reconnect them. See Chapter 2 of the Installation guide (pdf) for cabling diagrams if needed.

  7. Remove the front bezel and top cover.
  8. Remove the circuit card hold-down bracket.
  9. Transfer all circuit cards from the old machine to the new machine. For complete steps, see Replacing circuit cards.
    • MSS-S: Transfer the video, NIC, and RMB cards.
    • MSS-H: Transfer the video, NIC, RMB, and SCSI RAID controller cards.
    • MAS: Transfer the video, NIC, and all port board cards.
  10. Transfer the disk drives from the old machine to the new machine. For complete steps, see:

Reassemble the replacement machine

To bring the new machine into service:

  1. When all appropriate internal components are transferred, replace the circuit card hold-down bracket.
  2. Replace the top cover and front bezel.
  3. Reconnect all external cables to the new machine as described in Chapter 2 of the Installation guide (pdf).
  4. Restore power to the system.
  5. Verify that the new system is working correctly using the tests described in Chapter 5 of the Installation guide (pdf).

Replacing the entire machine

If the entire machine has been damaged, you must install a completely new machine.

When you receive the replacement machine, complete the following steps to bring the system into service:

  1. Install, configure, and test the new machine. See the Installation guide (pdf).
  2. Restore crucial system data from backups. See Restoring backed-up system files.
