You can replace the following internal cables or components on
a Messaging Application Server (MAS) or Message Storage Server (MSS):
Replacing the motherboard to LED panel
ribbon cable
To replace the 16-pin motherboard to LED panel flat ribbon cable:
- Verify that the replacement equipment is on site and appears
to be in usable condition, with no obvious shipping damage.
- Shut down the system and unplug the AC
power cords.
- Remove the front bezel and top cover.
- Remove the circuit card hold-down bracket.
- Remove the old motherboard to LED panel flat ribbon cable as
follows. See Replacing the motherboard to
LED panel ribbon cable.
- Open the tie-down strap that dresses the cables to the front
LED panel.
- Unplug the 16-pin ribbon cable from the J4 connector on
the LED panel.
- Remove the cable from the tie-down strap.
- Unplug the other end of the cable from the J8H1 Front Panel
connector on the motherboard.
- Note how cable is dressed under the motherboard.
- Remove the cable. Set it aside.
- Install the new cable by reversing the removal steps (see step
5). Fold the replacement cable like the old one to dress it under
the motherboard.
- Replace the circuit card hold-down
bracket.
- Replace the top cover and front bezel.
- Restore power to the system.
If the system boots correctly, the new cable should be working.
Replacing the front LED panel
To replace the front LED panel in any MAS or MSS unit:
- Verify that the replacement equipment is on site and appears
to be in usable condition, with no obvious shipping damage.
- Shut down the system and unplug the AC
power cords.
- Remove the front bezel and top cover.
- To remove the old LED panel, first disconnect all attached cables
as follows.
On all models:
- Using a screwdriver, loosen and remove the ground connection.
- Unplug the 2-pin cable to the power switch (J1).
- Unplug the 16-pin flat cable to the motherboard (J4).
See Replacing the LED panel (MAS or
MSS-S).
On the MSS-S and MSS-H, also:
- Unplug the 4-pin RMB interface cable (J7).
On the MSS-H, also:
- Unplug the 3-pin power supply fail cable (J5).
- Unplug the 2-pin power supply health and reset cable (J6).
- Unplug the 10-pin SCSI drive activity indicator cable (J8).
See Replacing the LED panel (MSS-H).
- Remove the two screws that hold the LED panel in place. Set
the old panel aside.
- Insert the new LED panel and reattach the two screws.
- Reconnect all cables and the ground wire (see step 4). All cables
are keyed.
- Replace the top cover.
- Restore power to the system.
- After the system boots, verify that the LEDs on the front panel
are working correctly.
- When finished, replace the front bezel.
Replacing the interface cable
The interface cable links several internal systems, including fan
power and tachometer cable, the RMB reset cable (in an MSS), and
a 3-pin connector to the SCSI RAID backplane (in an MSS-H).
To replace the interface cable:
- Verify that the replacement equipment is on site and appears
to be in usable condition, with no obvious shipping damage.
- Shut down the system and unplug the AC
power cords.
- Remove the front bezel and top cover.
- Remove the circuit card hold-down bracket.
- Remove the old interface cable as follows. See Replacing
the interface cable.
On all models:
- Unplug the 4-pin power cable.
- Unplug the two 3-pin connectors to the fans.
- Remove any cable ties as needed to remove the interface
cable.
On the MSS-S and MSS-H, also:
- Unplug the 5-pin fan monitor cable to the RMB.
On the MSS-H, also:
- Unplug the 3-pin J6 cable to the SCSI RAID backplane. See
MSS-H drive cage cabling.
- Install the new interface cable by reversing the removal steps
(see step 5).
- Replace the circuit card hold-down
bracket.
- Replace the top cover and front bezel.
- Restore power to the system.
If the system boots correctly, the new cable should be working.
Replacing the RMB ribbon cable (MSS only)
Both models of the Message Storage Server (MSS-S and MSS-H) contain
a Remote Maintenance Board (RMB) for diagnostics and troubleshooting.
The ribbon cable for this board can be replaced.
To replace the RMB ribbon cable:
- Verify that the replacement equipment is on site and appears
to be in usable condition, with no obvious shipping damage.
- Shut down the system and unplug the AC
power cords.
- Remove the front bezel and top cover.
- Remove the circuit card hold-down bracket.
- Remove the old RMB ribbon cable as follows. See Replacing
an RMB ribbon cable.
- Unplug the flat ribbon cable from the 10-pin connector near
the top of the RMB board.
- Unplug the 5-pin fan monitor cable (press the clip on the
connector to release it).
- Open the tie-down strap that dresses the cables to the
front LED panel.
- Remove the 4-pin RMB interface cable from the tie-down clip.
- Unplug the 4-pin RMB interface cable from the LED panel
(J7).
- Remove the RMB ribbon cable. Set it aside.
- Install the new RMB ribbon cable by reversing the removal steps
(see step 5).
- Replace the circuit card hold-down
bracket.
- Replace the top cover and front bezel.
- Restore power to the system.
- After the system boots, verify that the new cable is working
correctly by checking RMB operation.
Replacing the SCSI drive activity indicator
cable (MSS-H only)
The MSS-H contains an additional replaceable cable that allows
SCSI drive activity to be displayed on the front LED panel.
To replace the SCSI drive activity indicator cable:
- Verify that the replacement equipment is on site and appears
to be in usable condition, with no obvious shipping damage.
- Shut down the system and unplug the AC
power cords.
- Remove the front bezel and top cover.
- Remove the circuit card hold-down bracket.
- Remove the old SCSI drive activity indicator cable as follows.
- Open the tie-down strap that dresses the cables to the front
LED panel.
- Unplug the 10-pin SCSI drive activity indicator cable (J8).
See Replacing the LED panel (MSS-H).
- Undress the cable from the tie-down clip.
- Unplug the other end of the 10-pin cable from the SCSI RAID
backplane (J7).
See MSS-H drive cage cabling.
- Remove the SCSI drive activity indicator cable. Set it aside.
- Install the new SCSI drive activity indicator cable by reversing
the removal steps (see step 5).
- Replace the circuit card hold-down
bracket.
- Replace the top cover.
- Restore power to the system.
- After the system boots, verify that the new cable is working
