R5si/R6si/R7si/R8si to R9si

Introduction

This section provides the information necessary to upgrade a DEFINITY ® R5si, R6si, R7si, or R8si system with a single carrier or multicarrier PPN to a DEFINITY R9si system using the on-site upgrade method.

Note: Releases 5, 6, 7, and 8 formatted translation cards are compatible for read-only operations with Release 9 systems. New formatted translation cards are shipped with each upgrade.

The DEFINITY ECS system description lists release features and functions. The DEFINITY ECS administrator's guide provides the commands and procedures required to initialize and administer the ECS. These documents are included in the DEFINITY Enterprise Communications Server Documentation Library published in CD-ROM.

For hardware details, see Circuit Packs for R9 and When to use the TN2401 versus the TN2401/TN2400 sandwich pack.

About circuit-pack carriers

If the system currently being upgraded was originally a System 75, the circuit-pack carrier or cabinet is no longer supported. This table identifies the obsolete carriers and cabinet.

Upgrade from
to

J58890AA
J58890AB
(originally System 75 small-cabinet carriers)

J58890AH carrier

J58890G
(originally System 75XE cabinet)

J58890L cabinet

Note: In some previous upgrades, the control cabinet or carrier replacement was optional. The replacement is required for this upgrade. Use the upgrade instructions in this section, but refer to the System 75 Small-Cabinet to R8si (Blowback) upgrade for instructions on replacing the carrier, and the System 75 XE to R8si (Blowback) upgrade for instructions on replacing the cabinet.

Before you begin the upgrade

Review the Preparation and process steps carefully. These tables describe the tasks that must be completed before the upgrade visit and who is responsible for them.

To prevent the most common upgrade problems, be sure that you have

Task List: R5si/R6si/R7si/R8si to R9si

Use this task list to upgrade from simplex or duplex R5si, R6si, R7si, or R8si systems to an R9si PPN.

Ensure that these tasks are complete before the upgrade visit:

  1. Verify the required hardware [R9si]

  2. Provide the required tools [R9si]

Perform these tasks during the upgrade visit:

  1. Verify the software version [R9si] to identify any software patches.

  2. Verify system status [R9si] to check the health of the SPE. Record any customer-placed busy-outs.

  3. Modify external alarm connections [R9si] if they change with the upgrade (for sites with external alarm reporting)

  4. Label and connect cables [R9si] if you are replacing a carrier or cabinet.

  5. Disable scheduled maintenance and alarm origination [R9si]

  6. Check link status [R9si]

  7. Record all links and remove only ISDN interface links (R6si or earlier) [R9si]

  8. Check IP Softphones (R8 to R9 only) [R9si]

  9. Disable TTI [R9si] if it is enabled. Do not skip this step!

  10. Translations can be corrupted if TTI is enabled. Confirm that TTI is completely disabled before you save translation!

  11. Save translation [R9si]

  12. Save announcements [R9si]

  13. For systems so equipped: Shut down DEFINITY LAN Gateway [R9si]

  14. For systems so equipped: Shut down DEFINITY AUDIX system [R9si]

  15. For a high or critical reliability system, Determine active SPE [R9si]

  16. Make sure the active tone clock is in the active SPE before continuing.

  17. Power down control carrier (simplex) [R9si] and unseat any adjuncts. For a high or critical reliability system, power down only the standby carrier.

  18. Verify TDM cables and connectors [R9si]. If new TDM terminators and cables are required, install them now.

  19. Remove translation card, TN790/B, TN778, TN777B or TN794 or TN794/TN2400 circuit packs [R9si]

  20. If the system has no administered BX.25 links, Remove TN765 circuit pack [R9si]

  21. For a high or critical reliability system, Replace TN772 duplication interfaces with the TN792 duplication interfaces (R6si or earlier) [R9si]

  22. Install TN2404 and TN2401 circuit packs and original translation card [R9si]

  23. Power up and set date, time, and daylight savings rule [R9si]

  24. For a high or critical reliability system, Upgrade other carrier [R9si] (Repeat step 19 through step 23.)

  25. Make sure the active tone clock is in the active SPE before continuing.

  26. Affix label [R9si]

  27. Verify the upgrade [R9si]

  28. Verify software version [R9si]

  29. If you changed scheduled maintenance parameters, restore the original values. Re-enable scheduled maintenance and alarm notification [R9si]

  30. Enable customer options and alarm origination [R9si] Check IP softphones here (R8 to R9 only).

  31. Administer customer options [R9si] (This requires an init login)

  32. Check link status [R9si]

  33. Power up DEFINITY LAN Gateway system [R9si]

  34. Power up DEFINITY AUDIX system [R9si]

  35. Resolve alarms [R9si]

  36. Restore any customer-placed busy-outs before you run the acceptance tests!

If the system contains adjuncts such as DEFINITY AUDIX, reseat them as required before you run the acceptance tests.

  37. Run acceptance tests [R9si]

  38. Readminister TTI and alarm notification [R9si]

  39. Restore announcements [R9si] or Rerecord announcements [R9si] as necessary

  40. Check SPE [R9si]
